The Blues Connections of

Jerry Lee Lewis

Jerry Lee Lewis used his huge talent to blend gospel, blues, and country music into some of the most exciting rock and roll ever created. His biggest hits were "Great Balls of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shaking Going On". He recorded many more great records, but they didn't have much of a chance of becoming hits because radio wouldn't play them--he was banned from the airwaves after he married his 13 year old cousin. After he wrecked his career as a rocker, he turned to country music where he became a star all over again. All of Lewis's life has been lived on the edge as documented in the Nick Tosches biography Hellfire. It's a miracle that the man is still alive.

Below is a list of some of the blues and R&B songs covered by Jerry Lee Lewis. They are arranged alphabetically by the name of the musician who originally recorded, popularized and/or wrote the song.

Bobby "Blue" Bland: Turn On Your Lovelight

Roy Brown (also Wynonie Harris): Good Rockin' Tonight

Bo Carter (also Leadbelly): Corinne Corinna

Fats Domino: Hello Josephine

The Dominoes: Sixty Minute Man

Johnny Fuller: Haunted House

Chippie Hill: Trouble In Mind

Lonnie Johnson: Tomorrow Night

Jimmy Reed: Big Boss Man; Baby, What You Want Me to Do?

Jesse Stone: Don't Let Go

Big Mama Thornton: Hound Dog

Big Joe Turner: Shake, Rattle and Roll; Honey Hush; Flip, Flop and Fly

Sonny Boy Williamson I: Good Morning, Little School Girl
