The Blues Connections of Nirvana
Nirvana was influenced by the blues through the music of white rock and roll bands. As a kid, lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain was a huge fan of the Beatles who were greatly influenced by the rhythm and blues of musicians like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Larry Williams. Cobain also enjoyed the heavy metal blues of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and a much more obscure blues-influenced band The Stooges. Nirvana's most direct link to the blues came through Cobain's love of the folk blues of Leadbelly. He contributed guitar to a recording of Leadbelly's "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" by Mark Lanegan, leader of the Seattle band Screaming Trees. Lanegan's version (which can be found on his solo album The Winding Sheet) is the source of inspiration for Cobain's magnificent, hair-raising rendition of this classic folk song on MTV Unplugged.
