The Blues Connections of

Steppenwolf

Steppenwolf's two big hits--"Born to be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride"--are familiar to most music fans. But, unless you're a big fan of the group, you probably don't know that the blues was a big influence on them. Lead singer John Kay formed Steppenwolf out of a Canadian blues group called Sparrow.

Below is a list of the blues tunes recorded by Steppenwolf or by John Kay as a solo act. They are arranged alphabetically by the name of the blues musician who composed, originally recorded, or popularized the song.

Bo Carter (also Leadbelly): Corinne Corinna

Jimmy Reed: Bright Lights, Big City

Muddy Waters: (I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man, Forty Days and Forty Nights

Sonny Boy Williamson I: Good Morning Little Schoolgirl
