If only you could have seen the look on my face when I pressed play on the bands new independent record "Papa's Dojo" for the first time! It would have been a look of astonishment and admiration. One month later, and I can't seem to remove Vent from my cd player. This is a little gem! Ok, lets get the formalities out of the way. Vocalist Jason Boyd is the younger brother of Incubus vocalist Brandon Boyd, and guitarist Ben Einziger is the younger brother of - wait for it - Incubus' Mike Einziger. To top things off bassist Paul Fried is the step brother of both Mike and Ben. Got that?! Understandably this all shows through in Vents music. Jason has a beautifully smooth voice that seduces the listener, and Ben writes great spacey guitar lines. Did I mention the lyrical content? Like older brother Brandon, Jason deals with issues directly to easily convey his feelings. "Hey, can I borrow your faith? I think mine's been misplaced. You...found another addiction and now you think your saved.." (Remedy). Papas Dojo is a great mix of pop, rock, metal, and funk, which would best be described as a mix between Far, and Incubus. Tracks range from the acoustic 'sweet frustration', the funky opening track 'stalker', to the closing piano ballad entitled 'when I drown'. Its all here. Those of you who turn your nose up at anything with a hint of a melody will not like this cd. An easy listening cd this maybe, but it will definitely stand the test of time, and if Vent aren't signed VERY soon, I'll eat my hat. Some people may resent Vent for riding on Incubus' fame, but let me tell you, Vent could make it without their impressive family tree. So what are you waiting for then? Visit Vent's website NOW, listen to a couple of tracks, and be buying the CD! 1
