SPECIAL K

"ALL I WANNA DO IS ROCK"
"The first time I sang was when I started playing in a rock band when I was nine," remembers Kian with a smile. "The first song we played was Wild Thing and we changed the lyrics to make them ruder!"
Kian shared a bedroom with his rock-loving brother Tom, now 24, so he grew up playing his guitar to heavy metal legends Metallica, Guns N Roses and Bon Jovi. It's obvious Tom was a bit of a hero. "I'd say, 'Who's that?' and if Tom liked them, I'd go, 'Oh yeah, I like them too." he says.
He could easily have gone down the rocky road to axe greatness had he not been saved by musicals and fellow Sligo lad, Shane Filan.
"I started singing and dancing in musicals like Grease when I was about 12, and that was when I met Shane," says Kian. Your brother must have thought you were turning soft!
"He didn't!" he laughs. "He never thought I was a wuss, but he used to say, 'You'll never make it,' 'cos there was one year when I was about 17 - we played in a talent contest against each other and they came first and we came second!"
But Kian got his revenge. "I thought to myself, 'If I don't do it with this one, I'll do it with the next one.' And the next one was Westlife."
But despite the boyband's success, Kian still has a darker, rockier side which he keeps locked in his lounge.
"I still play rock guitar - I'll turn on the amp and blast it out. I play with my brother's band, Fiction, too. It's a hobby, but I prefer Westlife," says Kian.
"Yes," he nods. "I'll show you my CD collection. It's the most bizarre mixture. BSB are my favourite band and I listen to Britney, 'N Sync, TLC, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Toni Braxton, Beethoven, Mozart, Metallica, Savage Garden and Guns N Roses."
