Free as a bird

Nobody will say that Free as a bird is the highlight from the entire Anthology series. As everyone knows, Free as a bird, released in 1995, was the first Beatles'single in over 25 years. Paul, George and Ringo completed an unfinished John's song, adn the result was remarkable!! IN additon, the singel brought three unreleased recordgins, one of them an unreleased track. Thse bonus tracks are not on Antholgy cd's. Original John's demos for Free as a bird appear nos everal bootlegs.

Free as a bird - I saw her standing there - This boy - Christmas time is here again

Real love

The Anthology 2 counterpart of Free as a bird, Real love is another incomplete John's demo that Paul , George and Ringo worked on. Another version of Real love was already released on Imagine, the film soundtrack. This CD also brings three excellent unreleased recordings. John'sorignal Real love demo is on bootleg Lost Lennon tapes vol. 34.

Live at the Star Club in Hamburg

This legendary 1977 release documents a Beatles show in Hamburg, in december, 31, 1962. Although Beatles experts tend to tell that Pete Best was on drums, the date leaves no doubt about Ringo's already being Beatles' drummer. However, it doesn't sound like Ringo on drums. So, this remains a mistery to me. Many people don't like this record because of its poor sound quality, but it's a very important document and shows a huge performance by the guys who would change the world forever just some months after. Live ar the Star Club is an excellent album, and brings several otherwise unreleased Beatles' songs.
It has been released in different forms. I have three of these. One of them, Rockin' at the Star Club, is a shorter CD version. The songs avaiable on Rockin'at the Star Club are marked with (*). Where have you been on my life and Hully Gully, avaiable on Rockin'at the Star Club, are not on Live at the Star Club in Hamburg.
The complete CD version was released in Germany in 1995 as a semi-legitime release. It adds four tracks to the original double-album. This happens because the UK and American version cointained four different songs each. The booklet bring a note by John on the release of the Hamburg tapes. This German CD version has the most complete Star Club tapes version to date. There is a reportedly yet-unreleased song.

Live at the Hollywood Bowl

The Beatles made two attempts in making a live album, in 1964 and in 1965, both times on Holywood Bowl. In 1977, the two show were compiled on a single LP. The songs listed with (*) are from 1964 concert. It's very rare in Brazil. I got it on a tape froma friend and I have NEVER seen the actual LP, although I have the bootleg versions of both shows.

The Early tapes of The Beatles

In 1961, the Beatles, still with Pete Best on drums, backed singer Tony Sheridan. Legend says that, because the word 'beatles'sounded too much like the german word for penis, the recording company 'suggested' changin the name to 'Beat brothers'. These recordings have been released in several different formats over the years, sometimes credited to 'Tony Sheridan and The Beatles', sometimes to 'Tony Sheridan and the Beat Brothers', sometimes to both. Many people don't know exactely in which recordings the Beatles play and in which they don't.
I have four different version of these recordings. The Beatles in Hamburg (vinyl), The savage young Beatles and Tony Sheridan & The Beatles tend to confirm that the Beatles and the Beat Brothers were the same band, but The early tapes of The Beatles, released by Polydor, seems to be the most reliable source. It has the most complete compilation of Tony Sheridan recordings, and it says that The Beatles and the Beat Brothers recorded their contributions on different dates and were totally difeerent bands, the latter being composed by Rikki Barnes (sax), Roy Young (organ), Colin Milander (guitar) and Johnny Watson (drums).
During these Tony Sheridan sessions, The Beatles recorded their solo numbers Cry for a shadow and Ain't she sweet?. My Bonnie, unexplicably edited on Anthology 1 would be the legendary Tony Sheridan single which lead Brian Epstein to the Beatles.
The follwoing track listing, from Polydor's The early tapes, will mark the Beatles tracks with (*)

CONTENTS:
. Ain't she sweet * - Cry for a shadow * - When the saint go marching in * - Why * - If you love me baby * - What'd I say - Sweet Georgia Brown * - Let's dance - Ruby baby - My Bonnie * - Nobody's child * - Ready Teddy - Ya ya - Kansas City

The Complete BBC Sessions

The bootleg version of double CD Live at BBC was a nine boxed CD set, with a marvelous book with detailed information on BBC recordings. This boxed set, added with a 10th CD and a BBC TV program CD, made clear that the offical version could never compare to it. Now, this cd-rom brings the COMPLETE boxed set, plus the xtra CD's!!!! It's over 11 hours of music, plus photos, articles and Netscape pluggins. An outstanding release!!!! For details, check the Great Dane box.

The definitive information source for Beatles recordings

This is a very useful guide, althought not very complete. It brings info on several Beatles releases, offical and bootleg. The big problem with a realease like this is that it's immediately outdated.

Vinyl singles

Sometimes you'll find old vinyl singles on used records stores. They are so cheap and, while they don't usually bring nothing of very interesting, they remain a charming and hisotorycal item in every collection.

Other compilations

We buy some compilations when we're begining our colletions. Some os them lose their appeal after we got all the offical records, but some of them keep great, be it becasue htey have interesting meterial or becasue they got na unesplicable charm. I'm not listing all tarcks from my compilations. If someone wants to know somewhere to start or to have a general idea of Beatles' work, I'd recomend one of the Red and blue albuns, of even the official records. Here I'll listen my compilations, trying to tell what each one has of iteresting.

Rock and roll music(contain alternate stereo mixes of early songs) - The world's best This German release brings several alternate stereo mixes, like cymbal 'All my loving') - Rarities(brings alternate version and rare stereo mixes) - Reel music - Beatle's ballads (brings stereo versions of early songs) - 20 greatest hits - Beatles forever(a very interesting compilation)
