In late 80's, Yoko and DJ Elliot Mintz agreed to air some unreleased John work. Yoko gave Mintz several reel tapes containing unreleased material from the ex-beatle. It's said that the tapes coitnained over 800 hours of recordings!!!!
So Mints began producing a series of programs, which he and Yoko decided to call "The Lost Lennon tapes". The first episode was aired in early 1988, and songs from the episodes, with Mintz speech edited out, were imediately released on various bootlegs. The mos famous of these are the ones from the series wich took the original name of the radio programs.
Lost Lennon tapes have been surfacing since then, and nothing indicates it will stop!! The bootleg series has reached the 35th volume in 1997. The original vinyl series are now legendary, and has served as base to various CD releases.
In 1989, Italian label Living Legend made its issue of the Lost Lennon Tapes. But this was not a version of the classic vinyl series. Another CD series called Archieves compiled some of the more interesting moments.
The original series hasn't received an ultimate CD relase yet, but several independent bootlegers have mastered the LP's onto CD-rom, always keeping the wonderful original cover art and soud quality.
The CD"s described on this page come from the following sources: original vinyl series (13, 23, 33, 34, 35), Living Legend issue (#3), Bag cd-rom and Yellow Bird (cd-rom). Yellow Bird cd-roms have wonderful sound quality, although the bootlegs have comited some little edit mistakes on some of the CD's.
The lost Lennon tapes are perhaps the most complete and magic bootlegs series ever produced!! It documents John's moments on studio, composing, jaming, rehearsing and more. It's impossible to chose the most essential items among the 35 editions of series: all of them are excellent! Every fan should be given the oportunity to know the complete series!!
