The straightedge movement: If you
are already here you probably already know what this is, but if you
don't, I'd like to tell you and if you already know, well listen to
what I have to say. This is a youth movement where you would attach
beliefs to a way of life, this way of life includes purifying the way
you live by excluding the use of drugs, smoking, drinking and having
promiscuous sex. Now, some include being vegetarian and/or vegan.
This movement is closely tied with listening to hardcore and punk
music, being involved in youth's health and just expressing feelings
in a positive way. This usually is signified by an ex marked on ones
fist. Ian McKaye of Minor Threat founded this concept in the early
80's and spread the idea through his hardcore/punk music. A while
back when most punk shows were in bars, minors would be marked with
an ex on their fist, so that the bartenders would know not to sell
them alcohol. Later, this was linked to not using drugs in the
straightedge movement. Needless to say, to listen to hardcore, you
don't need to be straightedge.
