'Larger Than Life'
What can I say, this is an awesome track. Fans will love it cos it's about US, and the beat is great, the vocals are great, the musical arrangement is great. In short, it's a masterpiece. It's got a bit of a hardcore (well not THAT hardcore, but it's certainly hardcore for BSB!) guitar halfway through too!! Very different, but good (imagine the Everybody performance in the MTV Video awards in the US. Personally, I thought that was GREAT). :) Apparently to be the next single after I want it that way, this is sure to become a Backstreet Classic.
'I Want It That Way'
Well I've already reviewed this in an old newsletter. This song is very Backstreet Boys-ish. Pretty classically BSB...don't you think? I don't mind, but there are a lot of people who want them to break their mould. Nevertheless...I think it's great.
'Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely'
I like to call this 'Show Me The Meaning', cos I think the title is too long, and it really wrecks it. Okay here I am talking about a TITLE. The song itself is a really nice slow ballad - sort of like 10,000 Promises, but better. Personally I thought 10,000 promises went on for awhile. This song is really 'meaningful' hence its name. Powerful...to quote AJ 'You'll get goosebumps listening to it'. Especially if you put it in your discman, turn it up high, and close your eyes and press the phones deep in your ears (just don't make yourself go deaf!) I doubt it will be a single, but we'll see.
'I Need You Tonight'
Ahh, we all know this song - it's also known as 'Heaven In Your Eyes'. Personally I liked that title and version better. But this song is quite nice. If Nick's your fave, you could easily be drooling! :) Anyway...it's quite nice but quite unlikely to become a single as it spotlights on only one member.
'It's Gotta Be You'
A quick, presice, on-the-spot and rocking up-tempo. It's got lots of syntenizers (spelling?! I think you'll get me) and change the voices of the guys a bit but it's GREAT. Quite likely to become a single.
'Don't Want You Back'
This is totally un-BSBish. I mean come on. DON'T want you back? But do you know what? Personally I like it. It's got lots of feeling and it breaks the mould BSB has. It actually breaks the boy band mould as well...so... Although I don't really think it will become a single (although there's a chance), it will surprise all the people who have become so used to BSB's old ways.
'Don't Wanna Lose You Now'
This is quite a nice ballad. It's slow, it has those lines...it's quite BSBish, but more mellow than songs like ALAYLM, QPG, and IWITW. More along the lines of 'That's What She Said'. Loads of fans will love this. It's got a growing power, one of those things which grows on you when you listen to it. It's got a bit of single-power, but I can't promise it.
'The One'
A very nice and almost-up-tempo song...a bit faster than IWITW (that's I want it that way, in case you didn't know). It's pretty nice, so I like it. It's one of those tracks you can sing along to and smile when you hear it. I dunno if it will become a single, but it'll be great on the album nevertheless.
'Back To Your Heart'
Quite nice. Not smack-you-in-the-face-excellent, which is what I think of 'Larger Than Life'. It's pretty mellow, too. But it's quite nice. It's very unlikely it'll become a single, but it's quite nice to listen to.
'Spanish Eyes'
This song is nice, but it's one of those things that sort of drags on a slight. It's quite a nice song and all, and I like it, though...it just doesn't hit you hard. Almost no chance of becoming a single...but you'll like it, especially if you're Spanish! (note...I do like this song, even though I sound a bit negative. I realized that when I looked at it again. but, no it's quite nice in its own way...)
'No One Else Comes Close'
All right, I dunno what to say about this song. I like it actually. It's very R n B - ish. A lot of people may not like it, but it might be that it grows on you. For the first two weeks after I bought 'Backstreet's Back' (on the first day it came out, just to say so! LOL.), I didn't really like 'Set Adrift on Memory Bliss' but then I loved it for while! It was so different, it took me time to adjust, but it was a nice piece. That song (Set Adrift) wasn't too BSBish, and I know some people hated it, but I liked it! This song is unlikely to become a single...but it's nice on a cosy night in.
June 5... I predicted this song would grow on me, and it did! I LOVE IT! It's one of my faves now... ;)
'The Perfect Fan'
Awww, how sweet. A song for their moms. Very nice. Oh yeah, and why doesn't Nick sing on this song? Not to be focusing on one person, but at the end, each of them sing a line ('...cos mom you always were...'). Brian actually sings it twice. He sings it first, the 3 guys (AJ, Kev, Howie) sing it, and then Bri sings it again, and then someone sings 'The Perfect Fan' (can't remember who, but it's not Nick). He (Nick) doesn't sing solo in it either. So I find it weird. Was he not there at the taping? Dunno. Single power? I'm not sure, but I doubt it cos it's the last song on the album. Don't hold me to that, though.
'I'll Be There For You'
Okay, this is on the IWITW single, but it may be on the Euro/Australasian album. It's quite nice - if you like Brian, you'll love it. All creamy and smooth...just like Bri's voice. If your fave's anyone else, you'll like it, but that's prob it. If you just like BSB, you'll like it too. I thought it was great, but I'd rather it have more variety in its vocals...ALL the other guys need some attention! :) (Because this is prob. a bounus track, it will definitely not be a single!)
'You Wrote The Book On Love'
This is supposed to be on the Asian album...but I dunno about other ones. If you're a Frack-Frick fan, you'll drool over this song. I loved it. It's really nice. I like it, anyway. Nick sings the first verse, and the first chorus. I can swear he sings 'Oh Brian help me sing' (gee, how corny) after it and then Brian sings the rest of the song. It's practically their solo cos in the choruses the other guys only sing way back in the background. Nick sings a verse and a chorus, and Brian sings two verses and all the other choruses. I'd rather see the other guys in it as well, but it's a really nice song with nice lyrics...so let the Frick-Frack (me the diplomat, putting their names in both orders) be happy, eh?!!
(by the way, in case you can't tell...I do love this song. When I first heard it, as corny as it sounds, it felt like my anthem or something like that. It's so great...I love it. Here I am, gushing!! Lol.)
My overall thoughts on Millennium:
Hey, the boys have definitely matured since the last album. Vocals are changed. It's great, it's the best work they've done so far. I'm quite skeptical if it could let them break through the boy band mould completely, but it'll definitely get them some of the way out. The third album is always supposed to be a turning point for an artist, to see if they have made it or not. And I think BSB have done the best with it. They have been postphoning this album for beyond ages...so I'm glad that it's more than worth the wait. My reviews a bit biased, lol, but it's what I do think. I don't truly hate any of the songs. I love a few of them...I don't mind a few of them, and the rest are somewhere in between. If you want unbiased thoughts go to neutral magazines. Not pop, not adult, not hard core. They are all biased whether it is saying they are good, or bad. If you wanna know what an unbiased person thinks of it, ask a friend who doesn't mind BSB but doesn't hate them either. After saying that, I wanna also say, I'm not really that biased, I really do like the songs and not hate any of them...but a BSB fan will always be a bit biased...you agree?!
