Drown
The first night I heard Drown come blasting through my factory
speakers on popular radio (aaugh!), I was completely mesmerized
by the singer's deep, somewhat nasal voice and the band's
stop-start approach. The song, catchy as velcro yet still
honest, attracted me beyond the point of just a "good" song.
Its effect on me was mammoth. I took it upon myself to find out
who this band was and immediately pick up their disc. I found
out that it was Son Volt (whose spelling of the name immediately
made me think they were a Christian band), and I picked up the
album Trace. I soon found out that this was no "type" of band,
except one that could rock as hard as the Rolling Stones, come
up with hooks as catchy as Creedence Clearwater Revival, and
play slowed down folk music with comparison to Townes Van Zandt
or Guy Clark. Needless to say, this song opened the doors for me
to Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, and nearly every other band that I follow
religiously nowadays.
Sky cracks open, walls falling to the floor
Just as well to keep it, a guessing game in store
You're with me now, will be again
All other points in between
And the cruel, cruel mornings
Have turned to days of swim or sink
(Chorus)
If living right is easy, what goes wrong
You're causing it to drown
Didn't want to turn that way
You're causing it to drown
Doesn't make a difference now
You're causing it to drown
Silence knows, can't drown a heart
Happenstance is falling through the cracks in each day
Too close now to change it
Fool's gold is lighter anyway
When in doubt, move on, no need to sort it out
You're with me now, will be again
All other points in between
And I want to find the right side of you
(Chorus)
When in doubt, move on, no need to sort it out
You're with me now, will be again
All other points in between
And I want to find the right side of you
(Chorus)
