Before there were any playboy pallbearers...
Karma's dinosaur age
Here it is: an overview
of bands that
eventually have lead to Karma To Burn. William Mecum played drums (!)
for a band called ADMIRAL in the late 80's / early
90's, while he and the other members were still in high school.
The band broke up in 1990 or 1991. The other members were
Michael Harbin, Sean Linwood and Joseph McRedmond (who went
on to play with Hoover and Crownhate Ruin). ADMIRAL released
one 7" on Soul Force Records in Scottsdale, Arizona that was
self produced and engineered by Eli Janney in March 1990.
The songs on the 7" are "Brother Can You Spare A Dime,"
"Horns Lay Silent," and "Seasonal." Catalog number was "Soul
Force No. Six."
A couple years later, a band from State College, PA called JUNCTION
recorded a seven inch called "Falling and Laughing" for the Art Monk
Construction label. This seven inch contained a tribute to ADMIRAL called
"Admirable."
William then joined TOOLING FOR BOVINES. But I have no information
other than that about this band.
And then there was the RED OAK SOCIAL CLUB. By then William was
playing guitar. They had JC Belial on vocals,
Orville Weal on bass and Nathan Limbaugh (future K2B drummer...)
on drums. According
to one eye-witness, this band was way ahead of its time and
a local sell-out every time. A month before studio JC was
forced to leave the band.
With Curtis Duhn on vocals, the band was renamed RED OAK
CONSPIRACY. This time they made it to the studio with the
singer, and they recorded a demo. They sold a tape titled
"12 Songs Amounting to Nothing" at shows and a local record
store in Morgantown W.Va. Curtis lasted until RED OAK
CONSPIRACY broke up in 1992.
That's all I have on the obscure past before there was
Karma To Burn. Read the rest for
an insight in the spark that led to the album...
