What can I say? I feel like I've just died. I'm sitting in the computer room at Uni, at 12:41 on the 16th of November, and I haven't been home yet. Last night I saw Karma To Burn. Looking at my beer-stained notebook I can see that Nien Nunb (sorry if I spelt it wrong) were a strong mix of punk-edged COC style metal, confidence and ace melodic vocals, capped with a fantastic rhythm section. Why they aren't huge already is a mystery to me.
Sally are a different prospect altogether. There are no gaps between songs, no communication with the crowd, and by the end of what I think is the 3rd song, my bowels are threatening to evacuate. Yes, Sally are a doom band. Or are they? After the first impression, their low-end rumbling sound begins to translate more into a mix of Kyuss meeting Cathedral at their Sabbathiest, and trading blows. Not bad.
And so we come to the headliners. I simply can't believe that a band as good as KTB should be playing a dive like the Cumberland. But they are, and it's a testament to their quality that a few songs in I drop my notebook and get down the front, thinking "sod the review". From this performance it's obvious that this instrumental trio don't need a singer. They're captivating from the word go, and even though I find it hard to remember the names of the songs (they're all numbers), that doesn't matter. Even though the crowd remains unmoved for the most part, the energy coming from the stage sweeps me up and carries me to rock heaven. This kind of music that hits straight in the gut can't be described as anything other than rock. It's that simple.
Oh, and afterwards the band and Johnny stayed at my mate Neil's flat! How cool?
