And the opinion is: Oasis is a good band to start a Britpop obsession with, for obvious reasons. First of all, they sound like the Beatles, perhaps the most successful band in rock history. With songs like "Wonderwall," "Champagne Supernova," and "Magic Pie," Oasis conjures the image of the Fab Four at their best. However, while they show the ability to emulate the Beatles, they are still able to develop a more unique sound, as shown on "Live Forever" and "Supersonic," which combines the American grunge of the 90's with stately, standard British-pop.
The sound of Oasis, while initially and instantly likable, quickly becomes torpid to Britpop enthusiasts. It's not because they're not good, it's because they don't stand up to the musicality and creativity of other modern Britpop bands. That's not to say their music doesn't sell. Riding high upon the success of their critically-acclaimed debut, DEFINITELY MAYBE, 1995's WHAT'S THE STORY MORNING GLORY, and 1997's BE HERE NOW, Oasis has sold more albums than any of their Britpop contemporaries.
Oasis--led by its dynamic duo, brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher--are definitely two of the real stars of modern rock. With an incredible fanbase and sellout tours worldwide, Oasis's force within the music industry is one that is rarely equaled. Their success around the world has made it possible for other bands to break out of the UK and into the uncharted waters of the US, Japan, and Australia.
