I was going out with Crystal at the time, and it was slightly before Valentine's day. I had a bit of money, and the Kuru show was coming up on the big day o' love itself, so I decided I'd take her to it. I mean, she'd read the lyrics to some of their songs, so naturally she was very intrigued and wanted to see them. I also called up my friend Mitch, and he said he'd go too. When Crystal and I were at my house getting ready to leave for the show, we got to talking, and she told me how Valentine's day usually sucked for her. So, I tried to make it suck a little less.
We apparently spent so much time making Valentine's Day not suck that by the time we got on a bus, it was less than five minutes to the start of the show. We got off of the bus and into the Rideau Centre (a very large shopping mall in downtown Ottawa between where you get off of the bus and Rideau Street, which is where the Upstairs Club is), assuming that we'd missed the show and weren't going to get in. As we picked up some pizza and drinks, Mitch ran into the food court looking for us. He had a stamp on his hand. With quick wit, I surmised that he had already been in the show.
"You can still get in," he said, "but Kuru's finished their set. Everyone's asking where the hell you are, man! Where were you?"
He stood there, panting, looking back and forth at us for a few seconds.
"Never mind."
We sorta trotted down Rideau Street, Mitch and myself smoking, and Crystal eating the bits of pizza that didn't have meat on them (she's a vegetarian). Eventually, Mitch led us to the Upstairs Club (recognizable by the fact that the entire street was shaking). We went inside, sat down, ordered some beer, talked to some drunk friends, discovered how cheap a drunk Crystal was, smoked until our lungs died, met Topon, saw some pretty good other bands (although everyone said Kuru was the best) and generally had fun.
Later, Crystal told me it was her best Valentine's Day ever.
I'd send her a card, but her boyfriend has already tried to kill me.
Back, ALL the way back
