DAVID HULL 9/24/99 Phone Interview, Part 3
By Mark Blair
Was Dirty Angels music similar to Joe's Music?
Probably a bit more pop, a bit less hard balls rock, but it was a rockin' band. It was a little
bit more songs oriented and a little bit less riff oriented. But it had some of the same sort of
funk elements like kind of funky rock riff type stuff going on, then I did Joe's stuff . And then
Farrenheit got signed. We did that and toured for a while and then we did the 2nd Farrenheit
album which never came out. There's some cool stuff on there, you know I have a bunch of songs on there.
That record may surface yet.
I'm really looking now to develop & focus more on writing and less on playing and touring. I'm
kind of burnt on traveling I really don't like the road anymore. I'm not going on the record as
saying I won't do it again, but I'm going to do much less of it. I've spent the last 4 years on
the road pretty much between Pete Droge. I was playing with this blues guitar player named Mike
Welch, toured Europe a lot he's really big over there and toured the states with him quite a bit
actually too. I also just did a record called "Suns Of The Jet Age" which is a local kind of band
the sounds sort of like if the Black Crowes were more of a blues band. So I keep busy and every
few years something that I'm doing gets real famous you know. (Laughs)
So you make a good living out of this?
Yeah pretty much. I mean I make enough so I'm taking a few months off now to get this studio
together. I'm not working or anything
That's great. I think a lot of people dream of becoming a musician and making a living at it.
Most end up struggling with it a lot of the time.
Like I said before earlier, it's the people that just kind of get obsessive about it. Sometimes
you've got to fly in the face of reality because your career may not be doing well that month or
that year even. Most people would question "Well why am I doing this" and they quit and go out
and get a real job. There's an old cliché "If you have to write, write if you don't have to, don't ".
I think that same people are just kind of more obsessed. It doesn't even mean that they have the
most talent it just means that they can't stop doing it. They're the lifers and I'm certainly
one of 'em.
It sounds like you've got some good talent and I'm glad it's working out for you.
I'm going out with Pete Droge at the beginning of October going to do another record with him.
I'm doing a record with this girl named Elaine Summers she's from Seattle and she's got this deal
on Loose Groove which is Stone Gossard's label you know the guy in Pearl Jam? So she's really
popular in the north west like Seattle, Washington, Oregon, Utah, Northern California. She had
a number one song on the triple "A" station in Seattle. But she's great and she's a friend of
mine and I'm going to do her record next month too. I think I'm going to do James Montgomery's
record he's a blues singer that's been around Boston forever. I'm going to probably do that in
November.
He's way back isn't he? Early 70's?
Yeah but he's still doing stuff and he's getting ready to make a new record. So a friend of mine
is his producer and guitar player Mark Coply and he's going to produce it, I'm gonna do that with them.
I'm probably going to go out on the road with Reeves Gabriels. I played on his solo record that
came out about 3 years ago, it's called "The Sacred Squall Of Now" and that's on Rounder I think
or some division of Rounder. He's an amazing guitar player, he's definitely something to see.
Now there's a guy that you can jam with, I've had some jams with him that have gone on for hours,
I mean literally hours. So it's always a good time to play with him. But mainly I'm just going to
try to stay home and put my studio together and do a lot of writing. I've got a lot of songs I
need to demo up and who knows there might be another Farrenheit reunion in the offing.
I missed the last one so I'll have to definitely check out that.
Yeah it didn't last very long you know? (laughs) But it's kind of a project to put it together
and everybody's really busy, so I don't know if will do it.
I'd love to see a Joe Perry Project record and reunion sometime.
I had asked Charlie that same question about a project reunion too.
I kind of doubt it will happen you know. I don't think Joe would be too driven to do that now. I
don't really feel he feels he has to prove himself that way anymore, he's proven himself enough.
Sure-maybe he'd go into a different direction if he did.
He made those records because he really felt he had too, that he had to make a statement as a
solo guy and I think he did great. I'm really glad that I was part of it.
