DEPECHE MODE | Depeche Mode remain as one of my all time favorites. I bought their "Violator" album for the song "Enjoy the Silence" a long time ago, but it wasn't until near the end of 1998 that I really listened to the album. I found their music to have a really awesome sound that I hadn't been exposed to before. Intrigued, I bought "The Singles 86>98". It was a perfect sampling of many of their great songs, and I was hooked. In the following months, I amassed a considerable number of their albums. Once again, this is a group who've been around for a long time. They make very eerie, dark, and sometimes strange music. Martin Gore's lyrics are really something special. |

The Smiths/Morrissey | Morrissey is the best lyricist I know of, and great music seems to follow at his heels. His band The Smiths were wonderfully original and boast some exceptional guitar work and lyrics. Once The Smiths broke up, Morrissey continued on and still managed to put together some really great music whether by his own merit or because of the fine work of producers. The guitarist for The Smiths, Johnny Marr, went on to a few new projexts but has not since risen to the level he did in his youth. |

INXS | My first memories of INXS are from a few years ago seeing a VH1 peformance and thinking they were some kind of U2 rip off. It took a lot before I decided to buy something of theirs to see how it was. I bought a used copy of "Listen Like Thieves". I didn't think it was that great at first, but after a few listens I started to change my mind. I bought a few more of ther albums pretty cheap, and eventually began to gain more respect for them. Somehow I was under the impression that they were a mediocre 80s rock band. That's far from the truth, though. This is a rock band with a sound that you can't find anymore. There isn't an album I own by them that I can say I am disappointed with. Even their older stuff ranks just as high (or higher!) as their newer stuff. Unfortunately, the lead singer Michael Hutchence is no longer with us. That doesn't change their legacy, though. INXS has a long history of great music. |

PRINCE | Prince (now the Artist) is another musician who's work has spanned a long period of time, and has encompassed many sounds. I still call him Prince as opposed to The Artist because I'm into more of his earlier work. I only bought his Purple Rain album at first because I couldn't get some of the songs out of my head, and it was driving me crazy. I really enjoyed it, so I decided to buy a few more albums to see what his other music was like. I was pleasantly surprised with all of it. He has written so much music; anyone who says they don't like Prince probably only judges him by a few popular songs they didn't like. For some really funky R&B, very explicit music, or some great dance songs, Prince is your man. |

U2 | I first started listening to U2 during the Summer of 1996. I began to collect all of their albums ranging from 1980 to 1993. The great thing about U2 is the astonishing number and variety of songs they have. Early on, U2 tended to play pure rock, and their music was heavily political, dealing with the problems in Ireland. As time moved on, they began to use keyboards more, and developed a new sound. The "The Joshua Tree" was their most successful album, but "Achtung Baby" is still the one I admire the most. Their music has helped me through many years, and they were the first band to expose me to the kind of music and the kind of musicians I would come to enjoy the most. |
