What Robert thought of the show
Friday, 8:00, CBGB's; I was there after work (dELiA*s which I hate, but let me not get into that now). I went to the show on the ivitation from a friend, Kristie -- the drummer's girlfriend who both kick ass. The moment I walked into CBGB, I thought, Wow, what a sleazy crackhouse. We kicked back a few beers, Jason and Shandy showed up, and eventually the bassist too. They did soundcheck, after which the voice told them they should have started 10 minutes ago. So they started their set, and they rocked.
Doug, the lead singer, was very animated. He jumped, he danced, he did his thing, and it was cool (because I think so). Anthony, the guitarist, had strings sticking out of his guitar, which I found disturbing and distracting (hello, heard of wirecutters or even scissors). James, the bassist, wasn't sitting down for once, which I found amazing. John, the drummer and Kristie's man, had lots and lots of drums and stuff. The good thing was he knew how to use them! which kicked ass, in my opinion.
They played their rather eclectic set -- complete with the standard covers of Op Ivy and Black Sabbath. They played two new songs. One was a twangy line dancing something or other, but the other was wonderful. Lots of bass and drums, and guitar. I don't what the words were, because the beer kicked in, but it was very pretty and it rocked. The old stuff sounded good too, except the song with bumps on the back, which Kristie and Jason mistook for where the ribs used to be. It was really, "where the wings used to be." Whatever.
Jason said said they sounded like Red Hot Chili Peppers, I disagree, so does Kristie. Maybe the bass, sometimes, or the wide range of musical influence, but not as a whole. Kristie just said they sounded like AC-DC doing Primus, I hope she was kidding. Did I mention the bassist kicked ass, they threw him out. The drums are still good. The lyrics are profound and fun, hitting on girls and stuff. Anthony should move more, isn't he the lead guitarist? John played drums, and he sounded like he knew what he was doing, and that rocks.
Did I mention they were really really good. You should see them. If they can play CBGB on a Friday night with an actual audience, then they are worth your viewing time. So, basically they kick ass. Go out there and see them, because I said so!
