this page is about our recording techniques. since jason maintains this winnie site, it will be mostly about his recording techniques which differ from ed's. oh, I'll make up a lot of terms, but I think they're understandable.

that's easy.....bob weston is thee recording god. Mr. Weston records with really nice room sound, as opposed to typical rock n' roll direct sound, where instruments are recorded with the mic in very close proximity to the sound source. bob weston tends to focus on miking the room, which I believe sounds far better. bob's sound is kinda like lo-fi, but hi-fi. uh, a pro-home recording, but in your living room? I dunno, it's just good.

winnie record on both 4-track and 8-track. We use a fostex 280 (I think) cassette 4-track and a fostex R-8 1/4" 8-track. Both these machines are relatively affordable, and produce pretty good results. As far as mics, we use a shure beta sm58, and an sm57.

when I record, I tend to use at least 2 mics, one in the same room as the instrument, and the other in a different room. The same room mic isn't directly by the amp or drums, but about 5 feet away. this gives a semi-direct sound, with a bit of room. the second mic does two things -->1)adds a bit of natural delay and, 2)tends to record a more bassy sound. when both mics are mixed together with slight opposite pans (L/R), it sounds a-ok. this is my basic technique. As always the ultimate goal is to sound like robert weston IV, so I'm still trying to perfect my technique.

As far bob weston's recording techniques, I've only been able to get bits and pieces of info. He favors PZM mics, those flat sqaure plate mics. if anyone has any more info so I can bite his styles, please tell me.
