I enjoyed Classic Whitney except her opening, "I Will Always Love You," which, in some spots, was a little off but she was naturally nervous those first few minutes. I stood up all through the song because I was nervous with her. I think because everyone knows this song so well, we really can become too critical.
There's a showbiz saying that if the final rehearsal goes well (Friday), the show will not be as good & visa versa. Well, I found that Whitney got better & better on Saturday's show, as time went on. Especially w/the "Aunt Rea", Cuz Dionne and gospel #'s. Some of her songs had a real jazz flair to it. Maybe she should explore that gendre for a different-type track or a maybe a complete album.
The duet w/Mom Cissy was touching. ( I love to see this pair.) It was nice to include her brother & she seemed equally proud of him. Mr. Bobby did a magnificent job as "Mr. Bogangles"......he was very fluid! I felt that the whole family-thing was well spaced throughout the show. I enjoyed her response to the audience (I love you, Whitney. I love you too! etc) alto' one particular fan almost abused the priviledge, but she handled it well. She also acknowledged her Platinum Fan Club members; wished I could have joined them in DC !
Needless to say her clothes were gorgious and hairstyle impectable! There will be Whitney copycat haircuts soon.....bet on it! She seemed to truly enjoy herself, especially the last 45 minutes of her program. I hope some of these classics appear on her next CD. Right now I'm looking forward to her duet w/Bobby on his new CD & vid coming out in a few wks.
A Classy Lady, a Classy Show !!!!
this is really a concert review, however, i don't know where to write the message. I was fortunate enough to attend the Classic Whitney concert in washington dc. She was fabulous. I went to the concert on friday and she performed the live one on hbo on sunday. whitney sounded good on sunday but sounded even better on friday. i think that the preparation concert on friday was too much for her voice. but she was great. everything she said was scripted so when i watched on television i knew what was coming up but i still enjoyed every minute of it. whitney sang songs form dionne warick, aretha franklin, sammy davis, ira gershwin, and diana ross. only three or four were her own. she did however come out for the encore performance and sing "step by step" and "i'm every woman." only she could get away with singing songs from people like that and have it sound good. she was phenomenal and fabulous!
I went on the trip to hawaii that the platinum club was offering. Hawaii was beautiful. there were 20 of us who attended the trip. many fans from the u.s.a., england & japan. the concert was great, bobby opened up for her for about a half an hour-while whitney snuck out with his back-up singers and sang back-up with them. after he was done-she came on stage and sang for about an hour and a half. she closed the show with step by step. we all had fifth row seats, so it made the concert more amazing than it was. her voice was great until the sixth or seven song, then she experienced some voice problems but pulled it off where it didn't ruin the show. after the concert we all got the oppurtunity to meet her and take a photo with her. she is more beautiful than on t.v. or photos. she was very gracious, polite and very professional.
Here some of the excerpts of the review by Daniel Goh in Taipei for 8
Days magazine 12 July - 19 July, Singapore:-
"....It was a cool 18'c with spring breezes blowing clear the last
vestiges of winter on Sunday,25th May, uptown Taipei. Just what the
doctor ordered for The Voice. No, guys, the air-con was not on. Not
because Whitney has given up being the Control Queen but because the
Whitney Houston concert, the Taipei leg of her Pacific Tour, was held at
an outdoor venue, the Taipei Municipal Stadium...........
....."Whitney dazzles Taipei!" I could already visualize the healines
tomorrow. Over 35,000 people turned up, meaning that Whitney sold
pretty damn good at the box office...........
.......Opening with her smash hit Im every Woman, Whitney went on to
perform all 11 of the No. 1 hit singles that have made her one of the
best-selling female singers of all time. Amid much frantic if
mechanical yelling "I love you Taipei...Thank you Taipei..... I Love
Yyeeoooouuuu........". She mesmerised the audience with her phenomenal
vocal range (her three-octave voice-enough already!)and power, not to
mention her judicious jiggling and cheeleader-bouncing in a
curve-revealing stretch-and-diamante lime-green jogging outfit! Whitney
did not disappoint. She took us through a musical tour of her
discography-proving that disco was not dead at all, just Waiting to
Exhale. The Disco Diva kept the tempo up-up-up with So Emotional and I
Wanna Dance With Somebody, all familiar but updated so you wanted to
rush home and dig all those dusty CDs............
.....Next came the slow numbers, All At Once and Saving All my Love for
you and out came that signature white towel that Whitney used to mop up
her sweaty brow. That caused a ripple of titters-but nothing to upstage
the majestic black magic of her voice. These hits met with thunderous
applause and perhaps this prompted her to shout "You are such beautiful
people. You are so beautiful....." Breathe, pant, breathe. Wild
clapping explodes. "I don't mean on the outside but on the inside."
Gurgles. Oops.. the crowds respond tepidly to this.. on the inside?
"But you are also beautiful on the outside." gurgle, gurgle, pant,
gasp......
........And when you thought the crowd could not get any hotter, Whitney
fanned the flames with a torchy closing number, Ill Always Love You,
from the soundtrack of The Bodyguard. When she finished trailing the
last notes to that (gee, it seemed like at least 10 minutes...), even
the people watching (free!) from the window ledge of the block of flats
across the street could be heard to be hooting, quite unconcerned for
their health or safety. Encore! Encore! Encore! Taipei stomps and gets
wild and unruly for more Whitney, for one moment forgetting about the
traffic and pollution problems, the Diaoyutai Islands disputes and the
kidnap/murder of Pai Xiaoyen. Whitney had earlier made known to her
promoters that she was prepared to sing 15 songs and she emerges
gracefully, in turtle-neck, leather jacket and jeans, to fulfill her
obligation: Step By step sung together with Brown, is her encore, her
15th number, her last............
............And so, suddenly it was all over. The happy crowds leave
humming the tunes and humming with energy, out into the windy nightscape
of Taipei for some other entertainment. At just 9.58pm, the night is
still young for Taipei."

(subject) the whitney houston concert in taipei, E-mail
A few days ago i went to the whitney houston concert on
taipei. it was great, she first sang i'm every woman
them some songs from her early albums. bobby, her husband
also came-infact her whole family went-her mom her sisters
and nephews, neice and all that. but only bobby went on
stage and sang. whitney then introduced her musicans. then
she started to sing gospel music(duh! it's her favorite
kind) and sang some song with bobby. she ended the concert
with i will always love you, it was great especially if u
hear it live. but i guess the audence didn't get enough and
they started screaming for whitney so she came out again
wearing jean and sang step by step, right after that she
left-so no one could get autographs. i must say the
concert was great, but during the concert she had some
vocal problems, only a few.
We just want to let everyone know that we saw her in concert last night and it was da bomb!! She was awseome and just fabulous. We really enjoyed the concert. We are from Hawaii and she ended her tour here in our beautiful state. Even though she had a cold, she performed as if she didn't. Whitney is the best! We got free tickets and we sat in the eighth row!! Well, to everyone out there, don't you dare doubt this beautiful and talented woman because she was just the best! To everyone who was complaining about her having a cold, tough! We had a good time!!
Hey everybody out there! I just wanna say that I went to Whitney Houston's concert last night and it was da bomb!! I had a good time with my daughter and cousin and we loved it!! She is the best!! She might have had a cold, but she did great anyway!!! Too bad for the people who thought that it wasn't that good because we did!
Also, she sang a few gospel songs which I thought was really great because she is not ashamed of the gospel and the name of Jesus. You go girl!!! HAWAII LOVES YOU BACK! PLEASE COME BACK AGAIN!!!
