As far back as I can remember, my greatest passion has always been for music. The feeling of being completely consumed to the degree where you become an integral part of the music. The chills that run throughout your body when the depth of beauty in one's voice is so moving that it can bring you to tears. The personal comfort that is found when uncovering the story being told. Then there's the artist - the individual who makes it all come to life. I will be this person one day. I want to make you feel.
Prior to my existence, my parents were musicians who completed their last tour while I was in the womb. November 19, 1976 was the day they bid goodbye to their struggle for fame and introduced their first baby girl Destinie Brandy Hopkins to the world. I grew up in a very musical household, although my parents did not tour any longer, I remember my daddy would play the drums while momma would sing and hold me in her arms as we danced around the room.
It wasn't long before I was banging on the pots and pans to entertain while momma cooked. She then began standing me on table tops so that I could sing. I knew from these very moments that I would dedicate my life to the pursuit of creating beautiful music. We were very poor so I wasn't fortunate enough to have professional lessons, but the lessons that I did receive were those that could not be taught - they were derived from the deepest understanding of my elders' experience. As the years passed by life had become increasingly difficult and many diversions had interfered with the pursuit of my lifelong dreams. As a result, I was forced to grow up quickly.
