"This was a real surprise. For about a month now, Nestor Louis has been trying to hand me a copy of this release, which was given to him by vocalist, Rudy Victorino (SANGRE TAINA J&N Records) who was seeking an opinion on the product for Carlos Cervantes. For those of you not familiar with Carlos, he was the manager at Variety Recording Studios here in NYC. Carlos also happens to be a well versed trap drummer who has the distinction of having recorded with the late, great bassist, Jaco Pastorious.
On DISCOVERING MY UNIVERSE Carlos highlights his talents with a little help from Jazz violinist Michael Urbaniak, master conguero Papo Pepin, bongocero and campanero extrodinaire Jose Mangual, Jr., as well as Piro Rodriguez (trumpet), Nelson Hernandez (tenor sax), Peter Adams (keyboards), and Al McDowell (bass). This is not your typical Latin Jazz fare, but a fusion of Latin Jazz with many other forms of Jazz. Carlos certainly learned his lessons well while with Jaco and has incorporated those lessons into the Latin Jazz idiom. If your looking for something different in the Latin Jazz vein do give DISCOVERING MY UNIVERSE a listen."
