motorsheep
the passionless are fearless
real groove
september/97
motorsheep, through the years spent playing badass punk rock in the shady swamps of palmerston north, can somewhat be talked about as the classic palmy band. this unique feel is definitely reflected in the songs that are on this album, most of them being well-known tracks, often playlisted on radio massey, like "incomplete loser", "piglet" and "jennifer 8".
the newer ones are just as good though. actually, it is a real pain writing this review, because i don't want to sound too biased, but there is really hard to find anything negative to say about this much anticipated album. it is engineered in the most professional way, the sounds, well they just go off as usual. the band in general sound as good recorded as they do live, which, i think, is their biggest achievement yet, considering the circumstances surrounding the recording of this ablum, like lack of time (due to constant gigging) and the inevitable lack of finances.
i was also glad to see that justus was vocalist on this album, because in my personal opinion his voice and accent really complements motorsheep's style of music. my favourite tracks would be "piglet", "drizzle" and "cutting in", the latter being a real obscure, unplugged-ish version of the song i knew from the days of the "incomplete loser" 7 inch.
i have never, as a reviewer or just as a listener, been disappointed by motorsheep, and the band seems to follow this trend with the passionless are fearless. the only thing i would change is the fact that this album seems to be a bit slower paced than previous recordings and live performances. i came to love 'sheep for their notoriously fast and furious tunes, accompanied by steamy percussion, and this essential element seems to be missing from a few tracks on this release.
other than that, motorsheep have overcome all the odds and made an outstanding album, to the greatest delight of all shady rockers out there who have been waiting for a good record for so long. on ya, guys. (9.8)
