LepNet is a mailing list made up of people who
share an interest in the rock group Def Leppard. Members share their thoughts on favorite Def Leppard songs, the latest Def Leppard news, and cry on each other's shoulders when album release dates are delayed. :-(
When you join LepNet, you are able to post messages to the list which are in turn redistributed to every member of the list. You can imagine that this can result in your having a very full mail box at the end of every day! For this very reason, LepNet is available in "digest format."
LepNet vs. LepNet-Digest
LepNet is available in two formats: Regular and Digest. Here are the differences between the two:
Members who subscribe to LepNet in the regular format receive each LepNet post individually as it is processed. Those who subscribe in the digest format receive one (or possibly two on very busy days) compiled message(s) including 24 hours worth of posts. Also, during certain times (i.e. when "the lads" are on tour or an album release is fresh) there are A LOT of posts on LepNet. If you don't like getting this much mail...the digest format may be the better choice for you.
PLEASE DO NOT SEND SUBSCRIBE MESSAGES TO lepnet@yahoogroups.com!!!
LepNet Rules and Regs
Although LepNet is currently unmoderated, it can only remain so if everyone agrees to abide by the Golden Rules when posting messages to it. Here are a few guidelines to help you in constructing your postings:
When creating a reply to a message and including text from the original message, please take a second to edit out any additional text that is extraneous to your reply, especially the signature of the original poster. This saves on net bandwidth as well as eliminates everyone having to page through a slew of text that has been previously read.
On occasion, threads of messages on LepNet will evolve to discuss issues which are not directly related to Def Leppard. Because some of the subscribers to LepNet pay for their e-mail on a per-message-read basis, it is customary to place the prefix "NDLR" (standing for Non-Def Leppard Related) on the subject line of such postings. This enables those subscribers who do not want to read such messages to safely delete them without having to pay to read the body of the message. Of course, those people who subscribe to the digested format of the list will have to ignore the NDLR messages within the digest, if they are not interested in them.
The intentional posting of false information on LepNet is absolutely unacceptable. Any list member who knowingly violates this rule will be administratively unsubscribed.
Flaming and fighting is EXPRESSLY PROHIBITED. All opinions are welcome, but please have respect for your fellow LepNetters. If you persist to flagrantly break this rule you will be administratively unsubscribed!
Lep Lusting is allowed on the list, but remember to put LUSTING in the subject line!
Above all, HAVE FUN!
Thank you in advance for your cooperation. If we all try our best to abide by these guidelines, LepNet will continue to be a very powerful and entertaining source of information about the worlds greatest rock band.

LepNet History and Stats
LepNet History
The following is a brief history of LepNet, compliments of Mark Schmidt. Thanks, Mark!!!
V1.0 A list maintained at UIUC, I believe. I wasn't around for this one, so I don't have too many details. From what I understand, the administrator graduated and moved on, and that was the end of it. Some of the people kept in touch and eventually formed the nucleus of..,
V1.1 (fall 1993) Word gets around the internet, and an informal mailing list grows. It is completely manual, with each person maintaining a list of the members to allow mass emailing.
V2.0 (late 1993) Jim Huguelet, at NIU, takes it upon himself to automate the mailing list. With the help and permission of his sysadmin, he tweaks "sendmail" to forward messages sent to the mailing list address to all members on the list. One concession to system constraints is that messages are tagged as low priority mail, and are not forwarded immediately. The system is a big improvement, is given the name "LepNet" by Jim, but eventually experiences growing pains due the systems constraints and manual effort required of Jim.
V2.1 (May 1995) LepNet moves to lists.realtime.net. Denece Gerlach takes over as list administrator, and the list is run with MajorDomo listserver software, becoming fully automated for the first time.
August 5, 1998, Susan Voss and Becky Gilreath take over the LepNet reigns from the wonderful Denece Gerlach. Susan and Becky move the list to egroups.com which in turn converts to YahooGroups.com
