Linda came to San Francisco at 21, in early 1987. "Within a week of arriving - bam - I had a job and a place to live." Although she had been involved in music and pursued some sort of musical interest while a teenager in San Diego, starting out playing the guitar and autitioning for all girl cover bands, the arrival in San Francisco marked the definite beginning of her actual career in music. Waiting tables and staying in a room without even a window, Linda would play her guitar and sing her own songs out on the street in the city. "People started recognizing me as that chick with the big voice." As the story goes, there was some sort of very sudden transformation in her voice or her way of singing that took place in the midst of singing her song "Down on Your Face". "I was just sitting there singing my song and all of a sudden this voice came out of my mouth." At one point, Linda referred to that physical change in her ability or manner of expressing herself as caused by her psychological state. "When I moved to San Francisco, everything became very clear to me. And this voice just came out of me." So finally Linda managed to get a gig at the bar where she was working, ended up selling it out and making six hundred dollars, and started playing more shows in San Francisco, with just her and her guitar. In 1989 a bass player by the name of Christa Hillhouse who'd been playing in a bunch of San Francisco bands, asked Linda to be the singer of this new band that she was in with Shaunna Hall and Wanda Day, and that was the beginning of 4 Non Blondes.
Supposedly, the name 4 Non Blondes was picked with regards to a particular incident in a San Francisco park where the band members were having pizza, and a very WASP kind of family walking by, and this little boy wanting to grab some left over pizza to feed the birds but was told his parents: "No, don't touch that, that's dirty from all the birds and people around here", giving four little hippie dykes a dirty look. The family was supposedly "very Blonde", so four little hippie dykes decided to call themselves 4 Non Blondes.
From their first rehearsal, in October 1989, 4 Non Blondes was together for a year and a half before getting signed by Interscope Records. By then both Shaunna and Wanda had been kicked out and replaced by Dawn Richardson on drums and Roger Rocha on guitar although the latter didn't join until after the recording of the first album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More!, they hired a guy (he might be outrageously famous in the music business or in the San Francisco music circuit but I wouldn't know) named Louis Metoyer to play on it. Supposedly Dawn and especially Christa weren't really into having a guy in their band and weren't all that nice to Roger and that was why he was kicked out not too long after they made it big with their album.
