Abraxas - Abraxas (AMS 007R)

We can speak of a true Polish invasion now, concerning prog rock. And Abraxas is not the least and last in line. Their debut album treats from the beginning an imposing prog-sound and just afterwards you can sit down and relax in your chair. Charming and thrilling from begin to end, and the instrumental opener really 'punches your nose'. After the very first soundings of the following 'Tarot' Abraxas makes you think of being in Marillion's first album period. Sinister vocals and many voices on the background are off course referring to Fish. Their theatral look on the sleeve with great art-work, confirms that comparisson directly. One after another you can listen to a couple of very strong composed songs and these Polish Prog Princes let many sympho-hearts beat twice as fast as normal by exposing Shadowland and Landmarq like guitarstructures and solo's. The short titles on the sleeve doesn't make you aware that the lyrics are in Polish as well. But  this will be an easy to handle 'problem' and you will absolutely fall for this overwhelming Abraxas album. To mention a few highlights: 'Inferno', 'Ajudah', 'Tarot' and the last song 'Tabula Rasa' which contains a very fine climax. It won't take long till we will decide to come to a Polish festival.
