Beware of darkness (vicp-5807)
Begin 1996 (or was it in the end of '95) this American group released the excellent album 'The light'. It was amazing to hear a band sound like SB. Now we've got 'Beware of darkness' with songs that are not so catchy as those on their debut cd. It is more diverse and maybe in this way a little bit less accessable. Spock's Beard takes a step further with the new album. After listening to it a couple of times you'll be aware of many exciting moments, just as on 'The light'. Besides the Beatles influences (the song-structures) you can find some Yes, Genesis, King Crimson veins. On 'Beware of darkness' you can hear some Gentle Giant and Jethro Tull. The absolute highlights are without doubt the sixteen minutes lasting 'Time has come', 'Thoughts' and 'The doorway'. No bad points, allthough you can say that 'Walking on the wind' shows a bit of flatness. After the release of a live doubler and some material on the latest Progfest album we'll still go on drooling with this marvelous music. By the way, on the Japanese import of 'Beware of darkness' you can find a live registration of 'On the edge'. Let's hope for a better distribution. © Symfo City ProgProductions |
