UNCLE SAM ON 104.1 2DAY FM
(a Sydney radio station)
"Between the sheets" - 19/3/98
US = Uncle Sam
RO = Rodney O (DJ)
RO - In your songs, you seem to
know what makes a woman feel sexy, have you done any in-depth
research to form your conclusions on what the ladies want?
US - Oh yeah, no doubt. I mean, for a woman to feel sexy you have
to give her her props, you know. For a woman to feel sexy you
have to constantly let her know how beautiful she is, just put
her in a real self-conscience mood, and the consciousness of
herself has to be something of her beauty, you know? And make her
think that she is the most beautiful thing in the world, and give
her her appreciation and respect, and that sexyness in her will
come out.
RO - Alright, it sounds like you've had some experience there!
US - I mean, you know, I have my opportunities!
RO - (laughs) Growing up, I understand, in the church exposes you
to many facets of emotion and spiritual feelings. What part does
God play in Sam Turner's life?
US - He's the one who placed me with Boyz II Men, you know. He's
the one who placed me with Epic and Sony. He's the one who gave
me the voice that I have, so I just constantly give him praise.
RO - Hey look man, I wanted to ask you, do you have any brothers
or sisters?
US - Oh yeah, that's how I became Uncle Sam. I've been Uncle Sam
ever since I was one year old. I'm the youngest of six kids, and
my brother had a daughter when I was one, and I've been Uncle Sam
ever since.
RO - I was gonna say... you know that old white guy with the
goatee and the hat in the red, white and blue, that's not even
proper!
US + RO - (both laugh)
RO - Hey Sam, Philly has helped you in a big, big way. Hookin' up
with Boyz II Men ove rthe phone, no less, I heard. At the right
time.... being the first artist to sign with their new label,
Stonecreek, having the Boyz produce, write, arrange and give you
juice all over the world; you were saying that's a blessing,
expand on that for us.
US - I mean, those guys from Philly over there, are like, so
down-to-earth, man. I mean, they are successful, and it is rare
to find people that count as down-to-earth, and that is willing
to go back to the hood and give somebody from the ghetto... you
know, and bless them. But that's what they did.
RO - Artists usually write songs from experience, do you?
US - Most songs I write from experience, but some songs I write
from capitalising on other people's experiences. And in this
situation, Boyz II Men, well, Nathan Morris, wrote "I Don't
Ever Want To See You Again".....
RO - Yeah, I was gonna ask you about that. It sounds like the
dude is crying 'cause somebody stole his girl. What's the word on
that?
US - I mean, it was just a scenario. It was a situation where I
don't think Nate went through it, I hope he didn't! (laughs). But
I definitely didn't go through a situation where it was my best
friend and the love of my life, but I have been hurt before. And
I use my experience of the past to display the meaning of the
songs.
RO - Sam, you've got Papa Chief bustin' a few rhymes on your
album, who else in the rap game do you give props to, and/or
would like to work with?
US - There's this young girl, her name is Yush, and She's about
to come out under (mumbles something) Productions, and she is
blazin'!
RO - Now you call your sound love on wax, bro, it takes two to
get it on, any plans in the future to sing with any ladies?
US - Definitely. I'm looking forward to working with some of the
powerful female voices in the industry.
RO - Like who?
US - I mean, it's a dream to work with Celine Dion, and Sade, and
Anita Baker, Faith Evans, SWV. You know, people like that. I'm
looking forward to doing it..... and Brandy.
RO - Have you had a chance to meet any of them and rap to 'em
about gettin' it on?
US - Well, Brandy sang on my album. Mariah Carey, you know, I
briefly spoke to her about it. It might happen in the future.
RO - Yeah, She was just down here having a little fun. Any plans
on you coming down here? Boyz II Men have been here twice
already. Sam, when are you comin' down?
US - I can't wait, man. I'm looking forward to it. They got me
doing the preliminaries up North. I'm on the phone, the next part
is coming.
RO - Dude, dude, come on down this joint man. I'm gonna keep
playin' your toons for many moons. In parting, what would you
like to say to all of the Australian ladies out there?
US - That I love you. I can't wait to be close encounters. You
know hat I'm sayin'. So... that I can feel your energy, while I'm
right in front of you. Singing to you, serenading you, giving you
your love and appreciation. I'm looking forward to it.
RO - Hey bro, God speed to you man.
US - Likewise, man. Stay good bro.
RO - You too.
US - Peace.
RO - Peace.
