TONY SHERIDAN

London guitarist and vocalist who became the first British rock 'n' roller to play in Hamburg, initiating the chain of events that brought the Beatles to international fame.

A friend of Sheridan's encountered German entrepreneur Bruno Koschmeider while the latter was looking for bands to book into his Hamburg clubs. Although he didn't have a band, he told the club owner that he was a member of the "Jets", a band that didn't even exist. Easily convinced, Koschmeider hired them and in May 1960, the band, fronted by Sheridan, debuted at the Kaiserkeller.

Sheridan then became a regular at the Top Ten Club and used Mersey bands to back him up. During their second trip to Hamburg, the Beatles joined him for two Polydor recording sessions produced by Bert Kaempfert, which resulted in the Fabs' first commercial release, "My Bonnie (Lies Over The Ocean)". Enthusiastic reviews in Liverpool's music newspaper, Mersey Beat, turned the record into a minor hit and it was this attention that led Brian Epstein to attend a performance of the Beatles in the Cavern Club.
