The Beatles’ mob scence send-off from London was eclipsed by their enthusiastic welcomes at New York’s Kennedy Airport and Washington’s National Airport - scenes largely engineered by Capitol Records.

The first show in which the Beatles’ line-up was John, Paul George and Jimmy Nicol. Ringo had collapsed on the previous day during a photo session and was confined to a hospital bed. With less than twenty-four hours before the Fabs' scheduled departure, Brian Epstein ordered George Martin to find a replacement. Martin called Nichols, with whom he had worked recently on a session for Georgie Fame. Once the remaining three Beatles - particularly George, who was obstinate - had been convinced that hiring a stand in for Ringo was the right thing to do, rehearsals were wedged into every available moment before the Copenhagen show.

The Beatles’ reception in Adelaide, for which thirty thousand fans (in a state with a population of one million) mobbed the local town hall, was unparalleled at any time in their career. A recording of the show had surfaced as a bootleg.

When the tour was announced without a Kansas City show, Charles O’Finley, owner of the local baseball team and stadium, promised his community that the Beatles would play for them. To increase the likelihood that this would happen, he offered a fee of $150,000, a world record for a rock concert at the time. Brian Epstein accepted and the Kansas City show was added to the tour schedule.
