MEMORIAL ON REEF

A memorial to George Harrison will be erected by friends and neighbours near his Australian hideaway on the Great Barrier Reef.

Harrison owned a Mediterranean style home on Hamilton Island overlooking the Whitsunday Passage.

The home was built in 1984 and although Harrison last stayed at the Let's Be Avenue address in March 1999, locals remembered him fondly.

A friend of 11 years told Brisbane's Sunday Mail newspaper Harrison maintained a relaxed profile during his visits to the island, which he used as a retreat from life in the public eye: "He was very quiet and easy going."

Whitsunday Shire councillor Samantha Duncan said Harrison was known to occassionally jam with local musicians until the early hours of the morning on the island.

Another councillor and musician, Kieran McCarthy, said he met Harrison at a restaurant on the island several years ago.

"He was a very amiable sort of guy - very friendly," Mr McCarthy said.

"He had a certain aura about him, but he was a very personable kind of guy."
