Let It Be, although released a year after Abbey Road in 1970, really predates that album, composed for the most part of the live studio knockabouts done at the time they were filming Let It Be the movie. There are one or two first grade Beatles songs - Paul McCartney's title track, John Lennon's "Across The Universe", the rooftop rock out of "Get Back" - but too much is given to rough and unready sketches ("For You Blue", "Dig A Pony"), casual jam session ("One After 909") and plain daft throwaways ("Maggie Mae", "Dig It"). Like the film, the LP of Let It Be is a rather ragged snapshot of the Beatles in the early stages of disintergration. They did have one last gasp inside them, even so and that was Abbey Road. A wonderful way to go.
