Hi and welcome to my page about Immagration, and what I have found out so far about it. First a little background.
As most of you know I found the love of my life on the net. Palmer is in Canada and I from the states. We began talking to each other in September 1998 and finally met for the first time in Calgary Alberta. I flew here, that was in March of 1999. Palmer flew to Iowa in April of 99,I flew here again in June and she flew to Iowa in July and spent 2 wonderful weeks with me. While she was in Iowa we decided that it was best if I moved to Canada and lived here. This was due to her having 2 girls and didn't want to uproot them.
In October of 1999, I made my way to Coutts Alberta Canada. I was thinking it was going to be a very simple crossing there as it is a 24 hour port.
Was I ever wrong.
Upon arrival at the border I was met by customs and ask several questions. 1). How long you coming in for?
2). Anything to declare?
3). Any firearms?
4). Any Cigarettes?
5). Drugs or Alochol?
Well here is what I told them :
1). 2 months
2). Nothing to declare.
3). No Fire Arms.
4). 2 packs of Cigarettes.
5). No Drugs or Alochol.
The officer gave me a piece of paper and informed me to go around the corner and up stairs to Immagration. This I did.
I took everything I could think of with me to Immagration. I went in and was called to a window. Where again I was ask several questions. They ask for my ID, and proof of citizenship, and if I had any kind of a criminal record. I produced the doucments and a copy of my criminal record. The officer went back and checked on me and came up with the same record that I had. He then said " I am going to denie you entry". I ask why and he informed that it was my record and also informed me that I had to see the Senior Immagration Officer in the morning.
He ask how much money I had.How I met Palmer.
If we ever met face to face.
Where she lived.
I was then told that I had to show proof that I had access to funds either in the States or in Canada. I was sent back to the states to await till the following morning.
Palmer met me the next day and we both went across and were met by the same questions from customs. We then went to Immigration and they called me up to the window and was ask if I had proof of my funds from the states. At that time I didn't, so they told me that they would not look at it till I did. A quick phone call and it was sent. The Guard questioned Palmer alone and then once they recived the copy of funds I was charged 140.00 US to get a rehabilitated. They then let me in for 2 weeks. I was then sent to customs and was charged for a T.V.,V.C.R, and some tapes. Had to pay duty on those.
The Job I had lined up fell through. We extended my visa several times and applied to several different places for a job. Human Services Canada refused each one.
After a 6 mo. stay I was told to go back to Iowa for a few months to let things cool off here and so they would forget about me. Palmer and I were engaged to be married at the time but I still had to leave.
I returned to Iowa in August of 2000. I got a job working and saved money to return to Canada and Palmer. We got in contact with the head Immigration Officer at the Coutts Border and he directed us in the right direction. He was satisfied that what we had was a love relationship and that I was to get in at any crossing as long as it was a legimate visit. The plans were set that the end of October 2000, Palmer and I would come across again. We left Iowa and headed for Canada once again.
We went to a small port in Sask. and there was met by a Customs Officer. He went through the whole car and refused entry again. Reason was to much stuff for a visit. He was even suspicious that we had our paper work out and ready to give to him instead of him asking for it first. DAH !!! We were sent to a 24 hour port to talk to a Senior Immagration Officer the next Morning. The Senior Officer I talked to said that the only way I could get in was on a $4000.00 bond. Palmer got the bond and I was let in again on a 2 week visa. I was to leave Canada on or before 16 November 2000, and had to show proof that I had left. We contacted the Head Officer in Coutts and he informed us that the only way I could stay was to get married and then leave the country to honor the bond. Then drive to Coutts and come in and have proof that we are married in Canada and I would get in.
On November 16 2000 I drove to Portal Sask. and exited the country and made my way to Coutts. On 18 November I arrived at Coutts and was again met by the Customs Officer. He ask the same questions and was told once again to go up stairs to Immigration. I was questioned just like the times before, but this was different. I was married to a Canadian and was let in on a 6 mo.VISA and handed a packet of forms to be filled out and sent in for my Landed Status. I then was sent to Customs and was sent home. NO PROBLEMS.
The packet is about 30 to 40 pages and is very intense and goes through everything it is called. "IMMIGRATION CANADA Applying for Permanent Residence from within Canada. Spouses of Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents." The packet explains that if you are applying for Landed Immigrant Status and are married the person you are married to has to sponsor you for a period of 10 years. They want to know EVERYTHING about that person and you.
The cost for this is: $500.00 -----Processing fee
$975.00 -----Landed fee
These have to be paid before you get your status. Now after you send it in with the fees you well recive a notice in about 3 to 4 mos, to get a work authorization. Then you can work after that it takes another 6 to 9 mos., before the landed status comes in IF APROVED.
In the packet that you will be given is the following :
A. Request for Police Certificates/Clearances and Authorization for Releases of Information.
B. Fingerprint Request Letter.
C. Designated Medical Practioners.
D. Sponsoring a Spouse from Within Canada.
E. List of Provincial Contacts.
F. Population Chart.
G. Low Income Cut-off Table.
H. Sponors Residing in Quebec.
FORMS:
a)Request for Exemption from Immigrant Visa Requirement
b)Supplementary Information-Spouses in Canada
c)Document Checklist-Applicant (Spouses In Canada)
d)Application To Sponsor a Member of the Family Class and Undertaking
e)Sponsorship Agreement
f)Finanial Agreement
g)Document Checklist-Sponsor of a Spouse in Canada
h)Receipt
Now this has to be filled out completely or you will be delayed on getting your landed status.
There is a call center that you can call and get information to it is 1-888-242-2100. There you can speak to a actual person and will get the right information.
There is a web site to help there are forms and information there that you can use help you also.
What Palmer and myself have learned is this get all the information you can and do not belive what everyone tells you. I do know that if you get married in the states and want to come to Canada to live they well NOT honor a US marriage no matter what, you have to be married in Canada.
Once you are here you can not work, study, attend college ect..... If you bring your vehicle in you have 30 days to transfer it. Cost is :
$5.00 ----- Inspection Paper
$50.00 ---- Plates
$50.00 ---- D.L.
$50.00-$400.00 -- Out of Province Inspection
I am in hopes that this will help those of you who have plans to relocate to Canada.
One last thing Immigration does not like net relationships. They look down on them , but with hard work and alot of information you can make it.
UPDATE
I sent my paper work into Immagration Canada for my Landed Immigrate Status.
I done this in march 2001.
After waiting and calling the CIC call center I found out that I had to do one of two things.
1. I had to renew my visitors pass (that was valid for 6 months) as I had to stay current and legal.
2. I had to have employment authorization application in place.
Well Palmer and myself were not very happy as to having to renew my status (which was due to expire on May 16th 2001) we waited until a few days before the date. On May 10th 2001 I recived a letter from Immigration Canada that said that I could file for work authorization (send us 150.00 Canadian dollars) and we will see if you can get a open work visa. Well we sent it in on the 11th and it was delivered to them on the 14th. We are still waiting for the visa to come in but at least we know it is coming (or I hope it is).
From what we have been told if the application is in for a work visa you can stay, pending the out come of it. My wife Palmer and I are still staying informed and have kept every thing that we were given, from reciepts to the working copy's of the paper work. More updates as time goes on .
UPDATE
Well it is offical. After a long wait and alot of hard work i finally have gotten my Work Visa. Yes it is true I guess hard work and waiting pays off. I recived my work visa on Monday May 28,2001. What a great day that was I tell you what I went down to the Unemployment office and got filed for a SIN number(which I am going to get June 4th).I then went to the city and gave a copy of it to the fire department. I then went home and called a Meat packing plant here and talked to them about employment. I went out there and filled out a application. I wanted until Tuesday morning and called and talked to them again and they set me up with a interview on Wednesday. I went to the interview and got the job I am going to be working in the security department and working nights(grave yard shift). But hey at least it is a job. I told Palmer that they gave it to me to shut me up as I am sure they are getting tired of me calling to check on my status. But I have it and Monday night I start work. It has been a long up hill battle but so far we have made it I just hope we make it all the way.
UPDATE
Well this is going to be my last update. Yes you heard me right, this is going to be my last post. A few weeks ago I gets a letter in the mail from Immagration and I was told that my application for landed staus was done and I would be recieving a letter from the closest office to as to when and where I was go for my interview. Well it just a few days later and I got a letter from the office in Leathbridge. I was to be there on the 16th of August. I was to bring my sponsor, proof of my citizenship(meaning my passport, my sponsors proof of citizenship, the letter I got and any visa's I had. Well I and Palmer left on the 16th of August to go for my interview. I took the bible ( now the bible is a book i put together of everything that I have got or had to get for immagration.) I took the bible just in case. We found the place and went in we waited and was finally called into a room. The lady ask me a few questions like any dependants, proof of my sponsors citizenship, and if I had criminal history. I told her i did but had been pardoned, I had to show proof of that (thank god for the bible) she told us that she could of looked it up but didnt want to. She was sastified and left. She came back in with this long piece of paper and had me look at it to make sure my name and that stuff was right and she had me sign it. She took the visa's I had and said "Welcome to Canada " you are a perment resident now.She stamped my passport and gave it back to me then said we had to go to another place and get a new SIN card. Cause I found out that the one I have is not good cause it says check immagration status. Well we went and found the other office and filed for a new one. It is to be here and then that is it. We are done . I hope that you have found this to be helpful and informative to you. If you have any questions you may emial me at ckirk39@hotmail.com.
