Tony Jackson, lead singer with top Liverpool group the Searchers, left them in July 1964 after he became disenchanted with the bands' move away from their rock 'n' roll roots to a softer, more melodic sound. By August, he'd moved to London and assembled a new band, the Vibrations. The Vibrations had an organ-based sound to their music rather than the familiar twelve string guitars associated with the Searchers.

They toured Britain on package tours with (among others) the Hollies and Marianne Faithfull.

Signed by Pye Records, the band released several singles but, with the exception of their debut, met with little success. From the release of "Stage Door", during the summer of 1965, they were known as The Tony Jackson Group. Dropped by Pye after that record, a switch to CBS failed to improve their fortunes.

As work at home began to dry up, they concentrated on Europe where they remained an attraction until their demise.
