By 1965 many of the R&B groups were adding a horn section and becoming soul bands. One such group was the St. Louis Union from Manchester, and they were good enough to win the "Melody Maker" beat group competition in 1965, with gained them a recording contract with Decca. "Girl" sold fairly well, just missing out on a top ten place, but like so many groups they discovered that success with a Beatles song did not necessarily lead on to bigger and better things.
In 1966 they made an appearance in the film "The Ghost Goes Gear", which also featured The Spencer Davis Group.
They were a fairly popular act and played regularly around the country but they never graduated into the top league and split in 1967.
