One of the real characters of the era, Sutch began his career in 1960 playing at London famed 2 I's coffee bar, it was there that he was discovered by maverick producer Joe Meek.
Taking his lead from American rocker Screaming Jay Hawkins, Sutch put on a show that mixed rock 'n' roll and horror. Among the stage-props he used were an axe, skulls and a coffin. Recording at Meek's home studio, Sutch and The Savages often had their records banned by the BBC, a fact which only served to give them more publicity and notoriety. Although never achieving any hit records, The Savages were one of the most accomplished live bands of their day.
In 1964, he founded one of the first Pirate radio stations in Britain, often play his own records and those of his friends. He sold the operation later in the year to his manager Reg Calvert who re-launched it as "Radio City".
Also around this time, Sutch made his first foray into politics, standing as a parliamentary candidate for his own National Teenage Party in Stratford-Upon-Avon. Later he established the Monster Raving Loony Party and stood for Parliament in nearly 40 elections.
