Originally formed in Hertfordshire in 1963 as a folk group called Unit 4, they added a bass guitarist and a drummer to the line-up and changed the name accordingly with the coming of the beat groups.
In "Concrete And Clay" they produced what was generally considered to have been one of the best records of the era. A worthy No. 1, but Unit 4+2 never quite made the top rank and after a few more minor hits they became one of the countless competent but hit-less groups touring the country.
This ultimate failure was strange, they had more going for them than many bands. High quality original material written by Moeller and Brian Parker, who had led the group in their early days, was well-suited to their vocal harmony style, and many of their records deserved to do better.
