The Whirlwinds were a Manchester group who formed in 1964 and only made one record, but they were the launchpad for one of Britain's better-known talents. The five-piece outfit included Graham Gouldman.
The "A" side of their record was a faithfully reproduced Buddy Holly song while the "B" side was written by Lol Creme, another Mancunian who would meet up with Gouldman again in 70's band 10cc. The group broke up shortly after the release of the record, but Gouldman, Jacobson and Basso formed The Mockingbirds along with drummer Kevin Godley from The Sabres.
Gouldman then made his name as a songwriter, composing hits for The Yardbirds, The Hollies and Herman's Hermits, unfortunately, his group reaped no benefit from his talents.
In the 70's, the trio of Gouldman, Creme and Godley were reunited in 10cc along with ex-Mindbenders Eric Stewart.
