OK so I haven't done the round world trip yet (it's on the agenda)
But I do think I've been some interesting places.
In 1996 I was an exchange student to Belgium and lived in a town called Huy in Liege with a local family. This gave me the opportunity to take part in everyday Belgian life (including going to school) and also to visit many of the neighbouring countries including France, England, Holland, Germany and Luxembourg.
Also during the Christmas of 87/88 I went with my family to visit my uncle in Malaysia. In the month we were there we spend time in Singapore and Thailand as well
Below are some photographs of my journeys. Some are included on this page (for visual appeal) and others are on a separtate page
(for easier loading).
Please be patient as these load.
Every two years in Brussells, Belgium flowers are arranged in pattens on the Grand Place creating a carpet effect - or what the Francophones call "Le Tapis de Fleurs". Lucky for me I was there in the right year!
The Petite Rue de la Boulangerie
- or "The little street of the Bakery"
This tiny lane way that runs off the Grand Place houses more resturants than you've ever laid eyes on in one place! Delicious displays of the the cusine on offer line either side, as well a heaters for outside winter dining. Even if the menus are a little beyond your budget it's worth a look if only for the artistic spectacle of what can be done with food. But you never know - you may get tempted by some escargo!
Sacre Coeur was the first thing I saw upon arriving in Paris. It was fairly early in the morning, around 9am, and the rising sun was reflecting off the beautiful white cathedral.
The Eiffell Tower
One of Paris' most famous monuments was built for the World Fair in 1889. For those who don't possess a fear of their feet leaving the ground, evelvator will take you to any of the 3 levels open to the public (though when I was there only the first 2 levels were open, due to winter/off peak tourist season I assume) From here you have a spectacular view over the city and can check out which momument you will visit next or browse for souvenirs in the tower's gift shops.
London
I'm not sure but I believe this is Fleet Street and that beautiful white building is one of the old courthouses (Ol' Bailey's?). Here you can see the red double decker bus and English style cabs London is famous for.
I only spent a short amount of time in Holland and Germany. One day I had been in Holland, Germany and Belgium all in one afternoon - which I found a rather bizarre experience, being from the whole continent of Australia. I did take this picture to prove that I had infact been to Germany.
Stay tuned for the "Asian Experience"!
