If you didn't watch the MTV Video Music Awards let me update you on the results. First of all DMB lost in both categories in which they were nominated. My reply to that is "NO BIG DEAL." I mean they lost to Aerosmith (who are rock legends), and in my personal opinion "Pink" is an awesome song and the video that goes along with it is very creative. They also lost to Fiona Apple, a girl who's elevator doesn't quite reach the top. BUT the video for "Criminal" has a lot of originality and is very pleasing to the eye, so that didn't surprise me.
Of course DMB's live performance was what I was really looking forward to for the two hours that I had to listen to Ben Stiller's lame jokes. Even though I am not a real rap or hip-hop fan, I enjoyed the Master P and friends performance of "Make 'em Say UHH". But the highlight of the program was definetely the Dave Matthews Band.
First of all, "Stay" is one of the most exciting and crowd-pleasing songs that the band currently plays live. Then add Bela Fleck, Tim Reynolds, and the gospel singers from BTCS and you just have one BIG party. I can honestly say that this was the most electric performance I have ever seen by the band. The sound was superb and they actually had a time allotment large enough for them to play almost the entire song.
Bela Fleck came out with his electric banjo and really flourished the music with his improv talents. In my opinion, they should sign him up. He fills the empty space the same way a lead guitarist would--and a banjo would be consistent with the unique instrumentation of the band. Tim Reynolds was on stage also, even though you had to look real hard to find him. I don't think he enjoys the spotlight, much like Roi Moore. Tim also adds a lot to the quality of the band's sound, making it much more full and rounded.
Last, but not least, were the wonderful gospel singers who also lend their voices to the album version of "Stay." Their harmonizing was perfect and added a lot of excitement to the tune. In addition, I'm sure Dave enjoyed their presence because that meant he didn't have to repeat "STAY" in a falsetto voice 500 times at the end of the song.
If you missed this performance, I feel bad for you. But not to worry--MTV will only be showing it 487 times this weekend. Make sure you catch this one. You'll want to watch it over and over, and maybe even dance a little.
