Brenda's Dreams
Chapter Fifteen

Brenda stepped on to the elevator and pushed the button for the parking garage. The
doors were closing as Jax vaulted into the elevator. “What do you think your doing!”
Brenda yelled at him as the elevator started to descend. “I’m getting some answers.” Jax
answered back as he pushed the stop button then he pulled her into his arms, lowered his
head and kissed her.

Brenda, caught by surprise, had no chance to rebuff Jax’s embrace as his lips, warm and
demanding, covered hers. Before she could summon up any resistance, a wave of erotic
excitement sweep away her will. Jax’s kiss was all that she remembered. Her lips clung
to him, and one arm wrapped around his neck to caress the hair at his neck while the
other circled around his body to bring him closer.

She wanted to stay in his arms forever, wanted the kiss never to end, wanted him...

His body pressing hard against her told her his need matched hers. His hands sliding
urgently along the sides of her breasts betrayed his longing to touch her more intimately,
and she gloried in the knowledge.

The renewed taste of his mouth on her tongue, his scent in her nostrils, the feel of his
body under her hands intoxicated her. Everything fled from her mind except the joy of
being in Jax’s arms and sharing the wonder of passion with him. The way he’d left her at
the Cape, the way he had acted in his office, her determination never to involve herself
with him again...all were forgotten. Nothing else mattered but the magic of their
embrace.

A torrent of desire surged through her body, turning her knees to limp seaweed. She
moaned, arching into him. His murmuring reply, deep in his throat, sent a thrilling
shockwave along her spine to lodge deep inside her. He wanted her...

Yes, her body throbbed, yes, yes, yes.

Yes, her mind echoed back.

Suddenly the elevator shook and started moving down again. The jolt was just enough to
bring Jax back to his senses. What in the he** was he doing kissing her. Especially,
after the way she had treated him at the Cape. “NO!” Jax said hoarsely, tearing his lips
from hers and shoving her away from him. “Da** it, no, I’m not going to get in to that
mess all over again.”

She stared at him with anguished disbelief, her body still yearning for him, tears were
threatening to fall. Is that what he thought about their time together at the Cape?

“Once was more than enough.” He muttered, turning from her.

A hot flare of anger burned away her tears. Brenda reached down and pick up her
briefcase, which had fallen to the floor, when he had kissed her. She turned to face him
as the elevator doors opened in the parking garage. “I never want to see you again!” She
ran out of the elevator towards her rental car.

Jax watched her run away from him. He frowned in puzzlement. What was her
problem? She was the one that had left him at the Cape. He sighed and ran a hand
through his hair. Maybe he had better find out why she had left the Cape. He started
after her.

Brenda reached the rental car, rummaged around in her purse for the key to unlock the
door, finally locating it, she pulled it out and dropped it on the concrete. Da**, what else
was going to go wrong today? She bent down to pick up the key, but froze when she
heard a familiar voice behind her.

“Brenda?” Jax said.

Brenda slowly rose to a standing position and turned to face him. “What?”

“Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, not that you care anyway, but thanks for asking.” She turned away from him
and inserted the key in the lock.

“Do you always run away from your problems? Like you did when you ran away from
me at the Cape?"

Brenda turned around again and just stared at him.

Jax stared back for a couple of minutes. “Answer the question!” he finally demanded.

“I don’t know what you are talking about.” Her face was flushed and her voice was
hoarse.

“No? Next I suppose you’ll be telling me you weren’t the one who packed up and left,
not even bothering to leave a note.”

Her eyes widened. “Me? *You* left first!”

“That is not true.”

Brenda frowned, hands on her hips. “When I woke up you were gone. No note. No
nothing. I went over to your...” she paused and took a deep breath before continuing. “It
was close to two hours before I left. You had plenty of time to come back if you
intended to.”

Jax blinked as he considered the meaning of her words. “Was it that long? I went to get
us some food for our breakfast. I was going to surprise...” He shook his head.
“Nevermind.”

“Two hours to buy food?”

He spread his hands. “The first couple of stores weren’t open. Most of the streets were
flooded and then my car stalled. I couldn’t get it to start. Even if I had been near a
phone I couldn’t of called you. I didn’t know your number or even your last name. I had
to walk miles in that da** rain, and when I did get to your house it was locked and you
were gone.”

Brenda bit her lip. “You came back?”

He put his hands on her shoulders. “How could you think that I wouldn’t?”

“Neither of us wanted to be involved with the other.” She smiled a smile that lit up her
whole face.

Everything about her was beautiful. He longed to crush her to him like he had in the
elevator, feel the thrill of her response. Yet he knew this was not the time. Not while
there were still some doubts between them. She would only run away again. He wanted
her, God, how he wanted her, but she was right. He hadn’t wanted to be involved.

His hands fell to his sides. “I never would have left like that,” he whispered. “Without
even saying good-bye.”

Brenda folded her arms across her chest and looked away from him. “If I misjudged you,
you were wrong about me, too. I didn’t leave the Cape until I was sure you were gone.”

A piece of hair had fallen across her eye, making him remember what it felt like to touch
it silky softness. He lifted his hand, hesitated and gently let it drop. Wait, he urged
himself.

“Yes,” He admitted, “we misjudged one another.”

He glanced around, seeing people start to filter back into the parking garage from lunch.
No privacy.

“I think I better go. I have that meeting to attend.” Jax checked his watch. “In fact, I’m
very late.”

She glanced his way and nodded. “I need to go get checked in at the hotel anyway.”

He knew she would be a little weary. It was just as well. He needed a couple of hours to
sort out his feelings. “Fine. I’ll pick you up at seven and we’ll go out to dinner.”

“It really isn’t necessary to...”

“It most certainly is necessary. We still need to discuss your bid for the record
company.”

Brenda blinked, she had completely forgotten about the bid. Lois would shoot her if she
messed up this deal. She sighed. “Okay.”

Jax smiled. “Okay, now where are you staying?”

Brenda told him as he opened that car door for her and handed her the keys. She slid in
behind the wheel and put the key in the ignition.

“Hey, don’t forget to put your seat belt on.”

Brenda flashed Jax a smile and put on her seat belt.

Jax leaned down and kissed her on the cheek. “Thank you. I’ll see you at seven.”

Brenda nodded and turned the car on. Jax closed the door and watched as she backed the
car out of the parking space and drove out of the parking garage. Then he turned on his
heel and headed back upstairs. He couldn’t wait to see her again, now that they had
everything straightened out. He smiled.

Brenda pulled out into traffic and drove to the hotel. After checking in she went to her
room to unpack. Finished with that she decided to try and call her sister. Hopefully by
now she had forgiven her. She dialed the number and Sonny answered.

“Julia’s sleeping right now. I’d rather not wake her.”

Alerted by the tenseness in his voice, Brenda asked, “What’s the matter with her?”

“This morning she had some contractions and call me, hysterical, insisting I had to rush
home and take her to GH. Bobbie Spencer told her she wasn’t in labor, but you know
Julia. She wouldn’t believe anyone but her own doctor. Dr. Meadows was in the
delivery room, and when she was finally able to examine her, she said that Julia had
something called Braxton-Hicks contractions. Many pregnant woman have them, and
they are perfectly normal. She said Julia was definitely not in labor, she should just go
home, and that she wasn’t due to deliver for several months yet.

“How upsetting for her!”

“I didn’t exactly enjoy myself either. I had no idea that pregnancy would turn Julia into
such a shrew.”

“Pregnancy takes two,” Brenda reminded him, the hurried on before he could react. “Do
you think Julia will speak to me if I call back tomorrow?”

“Frankly, no. I’ve never seen her be so unreasonable, which is what I’ve been trying to
tell you. She’s behaving as though she walked in on an orgy instead of a brotherly kiss.”

Brotherly kiss! Sonny certainly had a convenient way of altering the facts to fit his own
purposes.

“Did she get my letter?”

“If she did, she didn’t mention it to me.”

“I’ll write her again. Will you tell her I called and asked about her?”

“I will when she is in a better mood.”

Brenda stared at the phone after she had hung up, wondering how long it would be before
Julia forgave her. Maybe when the baby came she would finally forget her jealous anger
She sighed and checked her watch, she still had several hours before she had to get ready
for her dinner with Jax. She might as well lay down and take a nap for an hour or so.
Seeing Jax again and having to talk with Sonny had drained all her energy.

A couple of hours later she awoke to someone pounding on her door. She yawned and
stretched before getting off the bed. “Just a minute,” she said as the pounding
continued. She walked over to the door, opened it and found Jax standing there.

She clasp her hand to her mouth. “Oh no! I over slept. I *am* so sorry Jax. Why don’t
you come in and I’ll hurry up and get ready, then we can go to dinner.”

Jax was at a loss for words, with her hair tousled and no make-up on, she simply took his
breath away. So he just nodded as he stepped inside and closed the door. She didn’t
notice though because she was too busy running around the room gathering things
together.

“I’ll just take a quick shower. Be back in about ten minutes. Why don’t you poor
yourself a drink?” She tossed over her shoulder as she went into the bathroom.

Jax made his way over to the bar area, poured himself a shot of tequila and gulped it
down as fast as he could. How in the world was he supposed to keep his hands off of her
when she looked like that? He didn’t know, but he had to try so that he didn’t’t scare her
away, he wanted her with him always. Where had that come from? He frowned, he
wasn’t sure he liked that idea.

Just then the shower turned on and Jax had to close his eyes and take several deep
breaths to block out the image of the water cascading all over her naked-petite body. It
wasn’t doing any good. He opened his eyes and took several steps towards the bathroom
door. He stopped in front of it and paused for a few seconds before reaching out for the
door handle.
