Inteview with David Letterman

David Letterman (DL): Our next guest stars on the very popular television program, Dawson's Creek. Boy, could you have a bigger television hit than this thing? She's in a brand new film entitled "Go!" It opens April 9th. Here is Katie Holmes... Katie... (crowd cheers).

(Katie is wearing a black dress that goes just below the knee and uncovers most of her shoulders, and is wearing 3 inch heels (I believe). Her hair is sleek and beautiful.)

DL: Welcome to the show... nice to have you with us again... and as I said, you're taller than I remember and I watched this movie, the 'Go!' movie and in that, I have in my mind that you're a shorter woman, but you're not at all!

Katie Holmes (KH): No, I'm pretty tall. In fact, when I started in this business, I felt like this huge, big giant because everyone's so tiny. It was embarrassing.

DL: You know... you hit upon something interesting there. They're tiny and I think that's why many of them go into show business because they're driven by that physical insecurity. (crowd laughs)

KH: Yeah, you're right, must be...

DL: Like Tom Cruise, for example, a tiny man.

KH: Again yes...

DL: Pretty Boy Tom Cruise, tiny, tiny, tiny man... and Sylvester Stallone, whenever he's on the show, which is not often...

KH: You're way taller...

DL: We have to put like a little booster seat for Sylvester Stallone (KH is cracking up at this point).. but YOU are not suffering from any kind of insecurity whatsoever..

KH: None

DL: You're a happy healthy, normal, well-adjusted human being...

KH: Oh yes

DL: Congratulations...

KH: Thank you (she's laughing and smiling throughout this exchange, with a big wide smile)

DL: Let's talk about Dawson's Creek. Well, this thing went nuts, didn't it? It's like a big big deal...

KH: It's crazy.

DL: How long has it been on the air now? 3 years?

KH: Uh... 2 years... just finished the second year..

DL: Just finished your 2nd year, oh my god! And for people... it's Dawson's Creek and it's... it's... (looks at KH not remembering what the show is about) what is it about?

KH: Well... I don't know... uh... it's about a couple of young kids who live in this fictional town called Capeside... and I'm in love with my best friend... and...as soon as he started to love me... then... of course... I didn't love him and all that...

DL: And is it a lot of teenage turnmoil... a lot of teenage trouble...

KH: Teen angst...

DL: Teen angst... A lot of kids having sexual activities?

KH: Funny you should mention... actually we had our big sex episode this year... my character came really close to closing the deal (lots of laughter) ... and it didn't happen... and a couple of episodes later I found out the reason it didn't happen was because... my boyfriend was gay...

DL: Really?

KH: And... uhhh... it was hard... oooohhh... ooohhh... nooo...(realizing what she had just said about it being hard, everyone bursts out laughing, and Katie gets embarassed and covers her face, laughing)

DL: So...every season.... every season you have a big sex episode... or is it...

KH: Oh God... (embarassed) Can we get off the sex thing...

DL: Really... I'll be happy to.... cause I myself... it makes me a little squirrelly to talk about it... I feel odd.... cause I'm like three times your age... and I don't know... maybe you and I shouldn't even be talking... (laughter abounds)

KH: (laughing) I'm just getting over the other thing...

DL: Well... how about in your real life... can we talk about your real life? Tell me about your real life...

KH: Okay... my real life...well...

DL: Do you have any hobbies?

KH: Okay... I like to.... (jokingly trying to make herself sound very normal) shop... I like to... drink coffee...umm... let's see... hmmm... I like to hang out with my friends....

DL: Do you have a lot of friends...

KH: A couple...

DL: Do you have a like a regular boyfriend? Or should we not talk about that...

KH: A boyfriend? hmmm... (Looks at her nails... and says coyly) Well I travel a lot... (laughs)

DL: You travel a lot?

KH: Yes... that prevents me...uhhh...

DL: Prevents you from what?

KH: That I don't have a boyfriend...

DL: You don't have a boyfriend because you travel a lot... ???

KH: I don't know...

DL: Geez... I should've thought of that... ummm (looks at his watch)... I'm sorry... I'm on the road... (back to KH) It's fun... it's nice to have a girlfriend..

KH: Good!

DL: And when you have a girlfriend you do everything together... you know.... everything... (you know he's talking about sex)

KH: Like...

DL: Everything...

KH: Oh... (pretending not to understand)

DL: And it's fun, ya know...

KH: Cool...

DL: Well... you know...

(offstage the band guy says something about Dave not having trouble at all... he's gonna be a kid)

DL: Hey... I'm travelling... I'm sorry... I can't... I won't be...

KH: (laughing and changing the subject from boyfriends and sex) Anyway...

DL: Anyway... Your family's good?

KH: My family's good. My mom's here, in fact...

DL: Oh, is she in the audience?

KH: No... she's upstairs....the poor thing... we just came from MTV... I was on the show and Britney Spears was on as well... and we came out and there were a lot of kids... and they were coming at us, and my poor mom, I was holding onto her and there were security guards... but she was caught between... (makes some motions) my mom, the security guards, and our hands... she was getting backed in... and (more hand motions showing being separated)... and she lost her shoe and everything... and I kept saying "I'm not Britney" but they were looking for Britney, it was all for Britney Spears anyway... (jokingly rolling her eyes about no one caring about her)

DL: You're lucky... did your mom... get her shoe back?

KH: Well she did, she's actually getting a massage up there...

DL: Really?

KH: No no... she's ok... poor thing though... no... god.... (laughing and Dave, etc starts laughing)

DL: I don't know what's going on anymore...

KH: I don't know either...I don't know (still laughing)...

DL: Did you hear the secret word? It's ionesphere (sp?)... the secret word is ionesphere... Do you ever watch the show at home... do you ever play along when we have the secret word game...

KH: Yeah...

DL: Yeah

KH: Ionesphere... ummm... ok... (pause) I think that didn't work... I want my $1400...

DL: No no... You can't... you're not eligible

BIG sigh from Katie and an upset look and everyone laughs....

DL: The film Go! That's a great movie, isn't it, very exciting.

KH: Yeah... it was a lot of fun

DL: Yeah... got a lot of stuff... and it's ummm... gritty.... but it's also funny...

KH: Yeah, it's really funny... we had a great time... I got to work with... (various actor names that I'm not going to try to write aside from Sarah Polly)... a bunch of people

DL: Good for you... it opens up when did I say, April 1st, is that when it goes?

KH: April 9th...

DL: April 9th... and it's called "Go!"... nice to see ya... good luck on the Dawson's Creek.
