Kathryn Janeway wandered through the party alone. Looking through the reunited families, and friends, and feeling totally isolated. Her mother and sister were stuck in Indiana because of a power grid failure. Other than the two of them, Kathryn had no family, and few friends who would even be allowed to the high security area.
She longed for something undefined. The room seemed full and empty all at once, and it gave her the chills. Suddenly, a warm hand clamped down on her shoulder.
"Kathryn," called Captain Jean-Luc Picard. "Welcome back."
"Thank you, Jean Luc. Its good to see you, too."
"Then why so sad?"
"Just tired and ready to sleep at home. Its been too long."
"There's a transport leaving in 5 minutes. I'm sure you could sneak out un-noticed."
"Why, Captain Picard, that would be un-Star Fleet of me...to sneak out without so much as a word to anyone."
"Captain's Perogative." She laughed lightly and headed towards the door. The longing returned as soon as she was alone with her thoughts. Instead of catching the transport, Kathryn continued walking the streets of San Francisco. No one noticed her face in the dark night, and uniforms were commen amung the people she passed. It was very strange to not be different, and to go unseen. It felt lonely.
"Isn't anyone trying to find me?" she thought to herself
The city was full of white noise. She listened to the rain as she stood on the bridge. Nothing else was important. She couldn't hear the footsteps of the man who was walking up to her. She didn't hear him clear his throat, nor did he hear her name being called softly. All Kathryn heard was the rain on the bay.
"Kathryn," Chakotay said softly. He rested his hand on her shoulder.
"Its a damn cold night."
"I know."
"I'm trying to figure out this life, Chakotay. Why is everything so cunfusing? Maybe I'm just out of my mind." He took her hand. "Take me somewhere new."
"Let's go home."
"Somewhere new, Chakotay."
"We've never had a home together. That would make it new. No one likes to be alone, Kathryn. I don't know who you are anymore, but I'm with you. We'll go home and go to sleep. I want to hold you, and sleep peacefully, knowing you're with me Kathryn."
