(Most of this you'll figure out after an episode or two but here are a couple
of pointers.)
Her name is Assumpta. It wasn't til after
she died and I looked at web sites that I found out it wasn't Sumter (like
the town in South Carolina).
Other problematic names.
Niamh Quigley Egan, her first name is pronounced "Neev." The vet's
name is Siobhan Mehigan. (pronounced "shi-vawn")
The auto mechanic is Padraig (pronounced Porrig).
The rock musician's name is Enda.
Police patrolmen are called garda.
The expression from late in series three "on a hiding
to nothing" is Irish slang for wasting one's energy. (As an
Irish person explained it, the literal meaning is to take a beating you don't
deserve, or knocking yourself out for nothing).
