Lovers and Strangers

Willie gets cradle-robbed by a visiting movie director (Elizabeth Ashley), and takes it much too seriously; Doug gets a dog as a birthday present.

Written by Leonora Thuna; produced by Nigel McKeand; directed by Ralph Senensky. Elizabeth Ashley: Elizabeth Kraft. Jane A. Johnston: Hostess. Zachary Lewis: man in audience. Jill Redding: girl in audience. Michael David Schackelford: Timmy Maitland.

Buddy: C'mon, Mom, he deserves a great present! It's not every day a person gets to be 50.
Kate: What a relief that is.
Elizabeth: Hi, I'm Elizabeth Kraft.
Nancy: Nancy Maitland. My baby, Timmy... Elizabeth Kraft? You -- you're not the woman who made that film Separate Ways, are you?
Elizabeth: One and the same. I hope you liked it, I can't stand criticism.
Nancy: Liked it? Oh, it was wonderful! I was depressed for weeks!
Elizabeth: Tell me something... Deep down in your heart, what do you wanna be?
Willie: Hmmm... That's not fair! That's not fair! Remember, I am just a mysterious stranger that fate has thrown into your path.
Elizabeth: Mysterious strangers do not drive family station wagons.
Elizabeth: Your father was wrong about you, but he was right about me.
Willie: No --
Elizabeth: Listen, Willie? Willie? You would wind up trailing on my coattails, you would become attached to me like a, uh, a devotee, and you wanna know why? Because I would insist on it, and, Willie, you are better than that! I mean, you have to be better than that, because I insist on that, too!
Willie: What you're really saying is that you don't want a kid hanging around, that I don't have enough to offer you -- so why don't you just tell me that?
Elizabeth: Willie, no! You have too much.
Willie: But not enough for you.
Elizabeth: Willie, you have too much for me at this time in my life.
Willie: No, not too much, just enough. Just enough for a quickie week-end, right?
Elizabeth: Willie...
[Willie walks out, slamming the door]
[random reunion at the airport]
Elizabeth: Willie, please, just listen to me --
Willie: No, I don't wanna listen to you.
Nancy (walking up): Here we are. Oh, Elizabeth! I was gonna call you! Oh -- this is my brother, Willie Lawrence; this is Elizabeth Kraft.
[pause; meaningful exchanges of glances]
Elizabeth: Hello.
Willie: Hello.
Nancy: Am I gonna get to see you?
Elizabeth: Uh, not this trip, I have to go... right now.
Nancy: Aww. Well, how was your week-end?
Elizabeth: Memorable. I fell in love.
[a few more meaningful e. of g.]
Elizabeth: I gotta go right now, or I'm gonna miss that plane. [walks away]
Timmy: Guh!
Willie: Well, Timmy old man, how was your week-end in San Francisco, huh? C'mon, we better go, I'm parked in a no-parking zone.
Nancy: How was your week-end?
Willie: Memorable.
