Starting Over

Annie's sole surviving relative dumps her into the Lawrences' lap -- where she doesn't feel quite comfortable, at first.

[Kate, brandishing two suits on hangers, walks in as Doug is shaving.]
Kate: Which one?
Doug: I'll decide after my shower. I don't even know what kind of a day it is, yet.
Kate: Oh, that doesn't matter. I mean, choose one for Sunday. Today is your problem.
Doug: Sunday?
Kate: The portrait. I've talked to the photographer; we decided everybody should be dressed.
Doug: As opposed to what? I'm almost afraid to ask.
Kate: Doug... I don't think I can do it.
Doug: Kate...
Kate: I can't. I just can't.
Doug: Andrea?
Kate: I'm running scared.
Doug: Well, I wish I could say that I'm not, but... I am. A little.
Kate: You're a big help.
Doug: Well, I also know it's gonna be easier for me. The whole burden will be on you... But we'll all be here. Especially me. Does that help?
Kate: A little. What about when it's time to change the diapers, what then?
Doug: Diapers?
Kate: I -- I don't mean it literally, but...
Doug: She's almost eleven years old.
Kate: Exactly -- eleven! I've been through eleven three times. I don't think I have the energy an eleven-year-old takes. Besides, Andrea is gonna need mothering desperately. And she deserves someone who can give it to her full-out. I just don't think I have enough left. I know I haven't!
Doug: And I know that any child does that needs love -- that comes within fifty yards of you -- will get it. [gives her a kiss]
[pause]
Kate: She was an awfully sweet baby...
Doug: Yeah? Well, there you go. Started already.
Kate: Nancy, Buddy, Willie... this is Andrea.
Annie: I prefer "Annie." I know -- Little Orphan, et cetera, et cetera. Don't worry, I'll rise above it.
