When the Bough Breaks

Kate finds out she's pregnant; a friend of Buddy's, on vacation from her all-girls school, picks Willie as a seduction target.

Written by Sally Robinson; produced by Edward Zwick; directed by Gwen Arner.

Audrey: Buddy, tell her she's crazy.
Erica: Why? Because I wanna be a woman?
Audrey: She wants to have an affair.
Buddy: Are you in love with someone at school?
Erica: A girls' school?
Audrey: You wrote that you were in love with your art instructor.
Erica: That's spiritual. He's 80. I'd give the guy a heart attack.
Erica: I go to boarding school in Connecticut. I'm 17 years old, but an older head, if you know what I mean. I'm in the top 10% of my school, and I'm very well-rounded, at least my advisor says so. I play tennis and field hockey -- which I'm not really wild about, but it's required. I don't smoke. I do bite my fingernails when I don't think about it. I've been to Europe, and I eat everything except for oysters -- I just don't like the way they go down my throat --
Willie: Oh, uh, pardon me. Did Buddy tell you I could get you a summer job?
Erica: I just thought you might like to know something about me.
Willie: Why?
Erica: I know I'm asking a big favor, but I think it's a very important part of growing up -- I mean, a person should make every effort to grow, don't you think?
Willie: Oh, absolutely. So what's the favor?
Erica: I don't wanna be a virgin anymore. Could you help me?
[pause]
Willie: You don't even know me!
Erica: But I've always liked you. Um, if you want, you can tell me about yourself, first, but you don't have to.
Willie: You're kidding, right?
Erica: If you think I'm jailbait, and this is some kind of a trick, I swear it isn't. I'm on the level.
Willie: Oh, I believe you, but I'm, I, I, I'm sorry, I, I can't help you.
Erica: Please, Willie. You're ideal. Men who read are very sensitive.
Willie: I don't read. I just like to look at the pictures.
Kate: I thought that giving his name to your son...
Nancy: Didn't help, did it?
Kate: I think you finish grieving... And one day you wake up, nine years later, and it's still there.
Nancy: Mom...
Kate: I know it sounds crazy. But getting pregnant so unexpectedly, at my age... It just seemed as if...
Nancy: ... life was trying to even the score?
Kate: Yes. I remember, the phone rang... I was sitting on the sun porch. When I got up to answer it, I dropped the book I was reading. I remember being annoyed with myself. Thinking how hard it would be to find the right place again.
Nancy: It was Dad, wasn't it?
Kate: I could hardly hear him, he sounded so far away. I just wanted to start that day again. I wanted to give Tim his breakfast... tell him he couldn't go fishing... He had to stay home with me. Away from the water.
Kate: I have kind of an announcement to make.
Willie: You got tenure?
Kate: Now, please, don't guess.
Willie: Well, c'mon, tell us, we're all here.
Kate: I've decided... Now, don't get too excited. We're going to have a baby.
Annie: Oh, boy!
Willie: What do you mean?
Buddy: She means she's pregnant.
Willie: Are you kidding?
Doug: Katherine... I felt we were gonna discuss this.
Willie: You mean, this is serious?
Kate: I wish you wouldn't ask that question. This isn't a joke.
Buddy: Then what is it?
Doug: Buddy!
Buddy: You said she wouldn't!
Willie: Mom... have you talked to your doctor about this?
Buddy: That's right, tell her! Tell her she can't!
Doug: Now, Buddy, wait a minute. This isn't definite.
Kate: Yes, it is definite.
Willie: Mom, have you really thought about it?
Kate: This is hardly the reaction I expected from my family.
Buddy: Mom, you're too old to have a baby!
Doug: All right, now, wait a minute, Buddy.
Kate: No, she seems to be expressing the group's sentiment.
