Constable Benton Fraser, a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, comes to Chicago on the trail of the killers of his father, who was also a Mountie. For reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, Constable Fraser remains in Chicago attached as liaison to the Canadian Chicago consulate.
Fraser has difficulty in adjusting to life in the big city. He is used to working alone in the cold, barren northern extremes of the Canadian territories. He lives by his own very highly developed code of honor. He is accompanied by his faithful wolf, Diefenbaker, with whom he conducts very interesting conversations.
He teams up with a Chicago detective, Ray Vecchio. Ray is a cynical, street-wise Chicago cop who, of course, finds Fraser rather strange. A great friendship develops. The two are very different individuals but they complement each other and help each other. Fraser and Ray Vecchio begin solving crimes using the techniques that Fraser has mastered in his northern environment.
Due South ran for three seasons (68 episodes) in the United States. In the last season, Fraser's partner is Stanley Raymond Kowalski who is posing as Ray Vecchio because Ray Vecchio has gone deep undercover as a member of the mob.
Due South is an excellent mix of comedy and drama with great dialogue, superb writing and fine acting.
Paul Gross plays Benton Fraser. David Marciano plays Ray Vecchio. Callum Keith Rennie plays Ray Kowalski.
Due South was the first Canadian-produced series to air on prime time television in the United States. The creator of the series was Paul Haggis who also wrote several of the episodes including my favorite, Victoria's Secret, in which Melina Kanakaredes plays Victoria Metcalf.
The idea for the Due South series came about as a result of a CBS television executive's wish to have a show about a Canadian Mountie or trapper. Paul Haggis was hired to write the script. Due South aired on CBS for two seasons and then when CBS withdrew from the production, an international alliance was formed that funded the show. The third season (known as seasons three and four, outside the United States) was shown in syndication in the United States. The last episode, Call of the Wild, was shown in the United States in May 1998.
TNT started airing Due South reruns in the fall of 1998.
For more information on the show, its history, the cast and characters, see the very comprehensive William and Elyse's Due South Page.
My web page is devoted to highlighting those aspects of the show that I love. This web page includes episode reviews, including a very long one on Victoria's Secret, pictures, and favorite quotes (Duesies). Short video clips, sounds, and lyrics are also on this web site -- see contents table below. Also see my Site Index for a description of the contents of the pages .
