Andy J's Obsessive Guide to Albert Square
Please feel free to jump straight to the official site BBC EastEnders (http://www.bbc.co.uk/eastenders) first, but here (for what it's worth) is my effort to understand the physical layout of the set, and who lives where in EastEnders' Albert Square, Walford E20 (fictional - set based at Elstree Centre in Clarendon Rd, Boreham Wood, Hertsfordshire). The GPS location is 51.65882 North and 0.27770 West, have a look from a spy satellite here (this is my first, and only, update to this page since 2004 - I hope you like it!).
I once had a look at some panoramic QuickTime views of the set on the BBC's website. Having had a good look around, I now feel I know the place as if I'd actually been there. This enhances my enjoyment of the show no end, as it gives me a sense of direction while watching. Having gone that far, I then felt I'd like to know exactly where each character lives. Some of this is available on the web (the BBC site is much improved since I first started this), but I decided it would be an enjoyable obsessive geek-quest to try and chart where every character has ever lived in the whole run of the show. I am also including guests who have stayed with various households, and employees in the case of commercial ventures. The list of Queen Vic bar staff could grow rather large! Rather like getting kids in the back of a car to amuse themselves on long journeys by looking out for specific things, this is just an extra way to enjoy the show. Sad, yes, but it passes the time. While following the plot as usual I'm also always on the lookout for glimpses of the set that I'm unsure of, so that I can figure out what goes where. Just a game :o) If you can help, please e-mail me - the address details are here. Those of you watching overseas (or on "Gold" satellite channels) who are a few years behind (no offence) may be able to assist fairly easily! Many thanks in advance. |
There is a
good list of cast characters, past and present, at
Walford Web.
Take a look at Ben Gransden's amazing Replica Queen Vic (BEWARE of malicious adware pop ups) - it's nice to know I'm not **THE** most obsessive EE viewer! |

puzzles...
(Bear in mind I've only taken a real interest in all this since May'99 - before that was just the usual confusion about the Queen Vic) "When EastEnders originally started in 1985, there were only 3 sides of Albert Square built. Bridge House (previously the b & b), Pats house & Marks house were all added in late 1986 (first seen on Xmas day). Turpin Road was built in 1987 for the Dagmar, and George Street was built in 1993 when the show went 3 times a week." New topography puzzles I'm not sure if I should mention... a) Doorway between shop and launderette??!! Just a bin store? b) Cafe kitchen area - in Paulines back yard?!! (and toilets, too!) c) Queen Vic's gloomy dartboard area - on the right as you walk in the Bridge St door... but look at the exterior - there's a window there! Update: There is a wallpapered board over most of the window, which has the dartboard on it. There is enough of a gap at the top of the board for the lights to shine through the window so that from outside everything looks fairly normal. d) Queen Vic again - the door nearest number 47 is within a foot or two of the end of the building. Yet inside, there is not only the payphone, but enough room for an L-shaped seating area, the piano etc. Obviously the set designers have borrowed technology from Doctor Who's Tardis, hehe. Queen Vic's upper floor layout : A source of much confusion over the years! Let's start with a simple ASCII sketch of the downstairs... The next two are the living room - the corner window is also the living room as is the one after that (in total, the living room has four windows). The next window is Grant's old bedroom & the last one (overlooking the square) is Peggy's room. The bathroom does not have a window neither has Courtney's old room. The upstairs hall is in an L shape." Deborah May : ...if you were to go up the stairs that we see from the ground floor you would go to the top that we see, turn right, go up about three steps then turn right again and go up another small flight of stairs. When you reach the top of them you should be seen from the top landing. Then you turn right again, up a few more steps, and go almost straight into the kitchen." - we have since seen (several times) how thhere is apparently little more than one flight of stairs involved, despite the height of the ceiling in the bar area (and many upstairs rooms are stepped down into). I recently saw an old scene with Grant and Sharon in their bedroom - the corner of the room had a foot or two of diagonal wall suggesting that the corner window is the last window of the lounge and the next window is the bedroom straight ahead from the top of the stairs (currently Janine's room). However a recent scene showed a window on a straight-wall part of the lounge overlooking the square... argh!!! But anyway - episodes for the last year or so have conformed to the following layout : I-----------I---------------------I I I Bathroom I . Bed I / I Upstairs at the Queen Vic . I-/ -----------------I ------------------------- . \ I I I \ I Bed : I My best guess! I-----------I I Peggy I I I / I Point x marks a couple of steps Albert . I / I up/down, then there is a main Square . Bed I ----------------I single flight of stairs - . I : stairs I with the bottom on the left I \ :............ x I I \ / a door - seen many times I-----------I /-\ -----------I in 2000 - where would it . / I \ I lead to?! It opens away . Lounge / I Kitchen I from point x I I I \ I I \ I I \--....---.....-----......------- Bridge Street Update 2000-feb-25: After all that, on Happy Birthday EastEnders yesterday, we saw a set designer admit that the layout has changed over the years, they have to cheat because there aren't enough rooms. He said there are only two bedrooms available?!!! So anyway, the stairs go in different directions depending on which floor filming is taking place. If the stairs were to be believed, the kitchen would have no window or look directly into the upstairs of number 47 - the upper floor is strangely at odds with the lower floor, by 180 degrees! Photo evidence : Dan meets Peggy exiting the lounge (peggy4a.jpg) and this shows the odd doorway. There is no doorknob behind Dan's hand BTW, it must be on the left of the door - and the door is set on the far side of the doorframe suggesting it opens outwards as on the layout above. Also note how the "dado rail" levels out at the left of the picture. Peggy lifts a bag (peggy2.jpg) to throw it down the stairs (peggy3.jpg). Dan comes to see what's going on, here's the view from below (peggy5.jpg). The more you study this issue, the more flaws you can spot! They really messed up on this, hehe. Thanks to Stuart Williams, who has helped me notice various things. Walford Traffic : Try this for a terrible simple roadmap... (vehicular access only, not pedestrian) I George St. station I------------------- I \ I --------"A" (dead end) Victoria I "P" I Road I I Arches I I Albert Sq I I I----------- --------I I I I I I I I I Turpin Road I I"G"IQV Bridge St I I I I-------------I I I I cafe I I ----- DD e20I Allotments I--"M" BB I KH-----"B"- I "C" police station Point "A" is by the Terminal Garage/Bus stop/Post office, there may be some pedestrian access out of the area but I'm not sure. Point "G" is the Albert Sq. gardens, "P" is a pathway through from the playground to the Station, and "M" is a pedestrian-only access by number 55 (ex Mark's house). Point "C" is a dead end, between Pat's house and Bridge Ho. but now possibly a pathway through to the new police station area QV is the Queen Vic. Point "B" is under a bridge by the Club e20, to a new area with DAGENHAM DAVE'S, Kenwyn House, Police Station etc. It is a no-through road though, according to the roadsign! Now, I'd like to raise the following point - the only vehicular access to the Square, Bridge St., Turpin Rd., George St. is from Victoria Road. This makes the whole area a bit of a cul-de-sac, dead end, middle of nowhere, with plenty of access to Victoria Rd. but no access to any other direction. Why then do vehicles, taxis, fire engines etc. often seem to go the long way around instead of taking the direct route? They must all be heading to and from Victoria Road but so often take the "scenic" route around Turpin Road! And how does this area justify a station, a pub, a thriving market etc. with so few people passing through?!! And finally... I'm still looking for evidence that the cellar under the QV is reached by the small doorway often visible behind the bar - with a fusebox above it - the way from the bar to the hallway that has a curtain. UPDATE the 12-3-2001 episode proved this is the case. Hurrah! Also, if anyone could sketch what the area outside of the back door looks like... please! I believe there is another cellar or booze storage area there. Ta. The area by the QV backdoor (inside) changes from time to time. Sometimes there is a booze storage area reached from there (which must co-exist in time and space with the ladies toilets!) and sometimes there is just a shallow-ish alcove instead of a passageway. Welcome to the strange science of Walford Physics!

We in the UK get our fix of EastEnders three times a week,
at 8pm on Mondays, and 7:30pm on Tues and Thurs,
uninterrupted by any commercials!
Filming is about 6 weeks ahead of screening, I believe.
It's shown on BBC1 - the UK's first TV channel, as paid for by the license fee.
With an ordinary aerial we also get BBC2 (less mainstream) and commercial channels
ITV and Channel 4. Most viewers can now also get Channel 5 too.
That's our lot unless we pay for some digital package...
If you have any comments or questions you may get in touch via e-mail or the guestbook - please see below for details.
I used to often visit the old BBC Q&A Message Board when it used to be quite good. I can no longer be bothered with it. It's too much hassle to register for these things, and enter names and passwords everytime I want to answer someone's question. Plus I object to the amount of personal information they ask for during registration. Stuff it! Also, they disallow ANY references to URLs or means of contacting anyone away from THEIR board, which IMHO flies in the face of the "spirit of the net" somewhat. Who needs it?!
For good old Usenet Newsgroup discussion try rec.arts.tv.uk.eastenders which can be accessed on the web (without a newsreader) right here (if it still works) (or a better one at Deja). I might pop in from time to time, but if you want to ask me anything you're really going to have to email me or use the guestbook.
Look... the Walford-cams DO show activity sometimes...
