Mudshark Superbinge 6

A diary from the SB6, held in Edinburgh, Scotland 5-8 May 2000.

The weekend started for some of us (Ally, Bob and Eileen), when we had a picnic on the train from Aberdeen. As usual we had lots of food (sushi, Greek salad, olives, cheese - typical Aberdonian Fare :) ) and lots to drink (wine and Benedictine).

Day 1 We arrived (slightly merry) off the train at tea time - arrived at the IBIS in Hunter Square, just off the High Street.  We immediately  met up with Colin and Steve in the hotel bar.
After unpacking, the three from Aberdeen met back in the bar, for another drink before heading for the Beehive (in the Grassmarket).
Our first event was 'The Literary Tour'.   This tour was a talk &walk visiting some pubs on the way. Pubs visited are: 'Beehive', then the 'Jolly Judge' (which Ally and I have visited before), then  'The Ensign Ewart' (best red wine), then a pub just over the mound, over Princes Street and on the pub on your left, down some stairs - I can't remember the name.
After the tour we visited 'The Witchery' - very good food and a huge wine list - but they allow people to smoke cigars in the dinning room - not a pleasant way to enjoy good food.

We had an addition - Christina from Brazil, who was on the tour and Colin invited her to join us for dinner.

Day 2 After we surfaced for breakfast - we walked down the Royal Mile, and visited the Palace of Holyrood.  Not such a good idea, when a little hung over.

Walking round Edinburgh always tires you out and add to this the amount of booze/food we'd consumed the night before and you see the result: one tired out, hungover Mudshark contemplating the Night to come.

'What! Another seven course banquet, with wine. My waistband will never survive'

Sunday Morning

Day 3

After breakfast (Colin had left by this time), the four of us went for a stroll.  Not really believing that M&F would want to go to breakfast in a pub.

So we followed a path down and below the castle - it was a bit murky, and damp - but what else do you do to recover from a binge?

Edinburgh Castle

Steve picks at the glue holding Edinburgh Castle together.

Apparently, the rock beneath Edinburgh Castle is cracking so to hold it together they've spread some sort of glue over the rocks.  Here we see Steve picking at this glue whilst wearing his chameleon jacket.
Somewhere between Cockburn Street (I think) and the High Street is the Literary Museum (it was closed that morning), but the steps and paving slabs leading up to it from CockBurn Street have quotations - that's what Steve is reading in the background

Fiona and I went to Ikea, then the pub, the boys went to the American football. This is some photos taken after Fiona and I had sampled some testtubes in a pub in the Grass Market.  That evening we went to an eastern restaurant and afterwards went back to the GrassMarket, where we sampled guiness and red wine (not at the same time)
