As the senior member of the team, Anton Hendricks is its physician and spiritual seeker. Hendricks left behind a successful private practice to join the OSIR, but returned to his roots as a field doctor for the humanitarian aid group, Doctors Without Borders, when he contracted a virulent strain of malaria now under control. He also must cope with the disappearance of his wife and daughter years before. Having dealt with the thin line between life and death his entire professional life, Hendricks philosophically and carefully delves into the unknown, searching for the key to what lies beyond this world.
